Inherited a cheap run-around - NCT, tax and insurance questions?

    Hi All,

Need some advice - I have a LHD Subaru Impreza turbo that I brought with me from Switzerland. It is insured by ARB and is costing me an arm and a leg (not many Irish insurance companies were even interested in quoting for a LHD Jap turbo!).

I need to take it off the road for a few months for some work, and someone has just given me an old Punto. It has no road tax or NCT.

    My questions;

1.) Insurance - am I able to use my fully comp cover I pay for the Subaru to provide third party cover for the Punto? It cost me nothing, so am only worried about third party liability. I guess I need to review the ARB policy for the detail ,but wondered whether this type of 3rd party cover for other vehicles is common place in Ireland? I am suspect of asking ARB directly until I know a little more myself - I am sure they would prefer I take out a new policy!

2.) NCT - do I need to register the car in my name before I can book an NCT? Can I legally drive it with no NCT?

3.) Road Tax - I think I need to provide proof of insurance to get road tax, yes? How does that work if item 1 applies to me, and I use the 3rd party cover provided by my main car's insurance policy?

I can see this getting complicated, and that the easiest way will be to cancel insurance on the Subaru while it is off the road, but I assume there will be cancellation charges involved (it's up for renewal now). Aaarrggghhh!

    Thanks for any insight, Richard

1/. Do a temp. sub. Should probably save you money.

2/. I'd imagine so. Driving without an NCT is 5 penalty points.

3/. You can get owner to tax it.

if u want to register it for the nct it needs to be in your name but if u want to drive it on third party off your insurance poilcy it cant be in your name so the best way to do it wud be contact your insurance company and see if they can do a temp cover on the punto and change it into your name for tax and nct purposes!

Doesn't the car itself (punto) have to also be insured so you can drive it 3rd party (from subaru insurance)?

I'm not sure of this and I'm guessing someone else will let you know for certain later.

As for NCT, if you get it booked and have a date, you should, in theory (not law AFAIK) be okay to drive it around until the date on the test. Just keep a copy of the NCT booking in your car in case you're stopped.

Make sure to get it taxed though, doesn't matter how you do it, don't drive without tax or insurance.

    .........

No. A common misconception, though God knows why.

Thanks all - while I may have 3rd party cover on other vehicles under my current policy, how do I road tax it without it's own insurance policy? Seems I'm scr*wed. It has been off the road since it last passed it's NCT...March 2007!

    Richard
