    hey guys,
I graduated about 2 years back with a HDip in Systems Analysis. Unfortunately this is my only formal education in things in IT and i dont have any industrial experience.
Would a hands-on project during my course be counted as experience?
What i wish to do is web design however there does not seem to be any web developer positions that take on people with minimal hands-on experience.

Can anyone give me some advice about how to start myself on the IT ladder?

    Hey Skwinty.
It's tough out there at the moment. You need to show willing and initiative.
if web design is your thing, pick up a book on php and develop a website at home.
Start there and once mastered in 1-3 months, depending on time, pick up another book.

    Best of luck

That's terrific advice. If you're passionate about it, JFDI. It's easy to create a bad site, make a good one, nay a great one, then make another. Use Social Media to get hits from your friends, "crowdsourcing" your passion and before you know it, you'll have an uncle you've not heard from in years asking you to design a site for his football team, lo and behold you're a professional with a commercial portfolio!

While IT is very competitive, and those without formal qualifications are tending to be bumped out. That said, the beauty of web design is that the quality of your work can be shown in ways other than formal job experience. Try designing a site for yourself, friends or an organisation - its not expensive and it is a good shop window for your skills.

You simply can't do that as say an Infrastructure analyst, without actually setting up a small demo infrastructure on a virtual platform. Be prepared to have to start small and work your way up. Every cat, dog and divil is trying to get into web media right now - you will have to prove your worth.
