Laptop Not Working Properly- CPU??

    Hi,

My laptop has decided it only wants to work in stages. It freezes occasionially requiring a power off to get any action or it becomes slow to a point that it carries out requests up to a few minutes earlier. I got a notification window to say that the CPU wasn't working correctly and it asked to notify the manufacturer but it froze before it had this completed.
The laptop is a HP dv6500 with a AMD Turion X2 CPU, I also have windows 7 and office 2007.

My real question is would it be possible to replace the CPU cheaply or would I be better off to buy a new laptop??

I'm back to college in 3 weeks so I kinda need this sorted quickly as I need it for my course(4th year engineering). If it could be fixed quickly can anyone here recommend someone in the Cork city or North/East (Fermoy) Cork Direction??

Just fitted a Turion 64X2 into my dell the other day, and its not difficult.

But, that sounds more like a operating system/heat issue. How old is it and have you ever cleaned the dust from inside it?

It was bought in September of 07, and to be honest I've never opened it up, I've always just made sure that the fan wasn't being blocked...Just out of interest what did it cost??

Open it and remove dust. Just because the outer vent is clear doesnt mean the fins inside are.

You could also run http://www.piriform.com/speccy and see what temps you're reading. Do this under load(as in keep the machine busy).

If this doesnt fix it, backup anything you need and re-install windows. Its likely that you have a load of malware/viruses or a corruption in the system. In any case a wipe ever year or so is never a bad thing.

CPU was €28 on ebay. They arent available new nowadays from what I can see.
