Well the bruen is a team of 10 broke down into pairs of which a minimum combination of 17 with a low of 6, previous years low & the usual requirement must have played 4 singles i think it was. Anyway an eg would be one guy off 6 and another off 11 or any combination of course that works cos it foresomes.

Some of the ones in Leinster (some go on to be All Ireland, some are province only)

Senior Cup - 5 on a team, off scratch, singles strokeplay initially to qualify and then singles matchplay after that.
Barton Shield - 4 on a team, two pairs of foursomes, off scratch
Junior Cup - 5 on a team, lowest h/cap of 5 (in previous year), singles strokeplay initially to qualify and then singles matchplay after that.
Jimmy Bruen - 10 on a team, 5 pairs of foursomes, minimum combined h/cap of a pair of 17, the lowest allowed being 6 (again, previous year handicaps). Foursomes strokeplay to qualify and foursomes matchplay after that.
Barton Cup - 10 on a team, 5 pairs of foursomes, minimum combined h/cap of a pair of 14 with no lower limits. Foursomes matchplay all the way baby.
Pierce Purcell is a combined 27 with the lowest being 12... again 10 on a team, foursomes, strokeplay to qualify and then matchplay.
Metropolitan Trophy / Provincial Towns Cup - 9 on a team, singles matchplay, lowest h/cap of 9. Metro is in Dublin, Provincial Towns for those outside The Pale. Both competitions are run the same but don't mix. Would be nice to have the winners of each competition meet in a further final!
Irish Mixed Foursomes - Combined minimum of 19, Foursomes matchplay, Man & Woman, shots are given/received depending on handicaps.

    Fred Daly for under 18's

Full conditions booklet which lists all the different competitions and rules etc...

Oh yeah, usually where the competitions are matchplay, you will have some games at the home club and some at the away club on the same day. E.g. a 'home' draw in The Barton Cup would be 3 matches at home and 2 away.

The ones where there is a strokeplay qualifying like the Junior Cup and Jimmy Bruen - this qualifying usually takes place at a (different) local venue... maybe 12 teams from the locality try to qualify. Often favours the home club but the venues change from year to year. The top 4 clubs will qualify and 1st plays 4th, 2nd plays 3rd in semi finals (matchplay) the next morning with a final later that same day.
The winners of these finals go forward from their localities to try to win their province (1/4 final stage?).

Check www.gui.ie and select your province, then cups & shields and see the results/fixtures.

great thanks. The most interesting thing i found out is that its based on the previous years handicap. so in other words you could have a guy off 2 playing in the Purcell if his handicap had been high enough the previous year, thats interesting

Yes. Last year in the Barton Cup we played Greystones in the semi-final so it was late enough in the season. They had some low-high combinations using young players (on the way down) as their high guys. I think in one case that that the low guy qualified off scratch and their high guy qualified off 16 (so a combined 16 (min is combined 14)) but at the time of the match were +2 and 9 so a combined 7 on the day!
I guess if you have a pool young players on the way down it's one way to go.
Some of the competitions (like the mixed foursomes) have a lower age limit of 18 though and ones like the Duggan Cup are for over 50's I think?

There are also a couple of similar type competitions which are run by individual clubs rather than official GUI events... there's the South Leinster which is run by Carlow I think? Brennan Cup by Arklow?

There are plenty of opportunities for players of every level to play inter-club golf and I'd recommend anyone who hasn't tried it to put themselves forward, especially if you enjoy matchplay. Your club will have all the details early in the new year... the draws are made in February I think and are published on the GUI website. Clubs often put up sheets on the noticeboard to see who is interested in playing in the various competitions... don't wait to be asked. You won't be, unless you're good :) Stick your name down and try out.

And remember, make sure you have 4+ qualifying competitions played this year so you can be eligible next year.

Do your 4 qualifying rounds all have to be in your home club or would open days, scratch cups, etc... count?

Can be from home or away once they are qualifying competitions so not ones where you have lift, clean and drop etc.
It doesn't matter where but they need to be recorded on your record (Golfnet).
