Building up to Squats and Bench Press?

    I'm a fairly light fella, around 11 stone and am starting into weight training....want to improve my general strength and increase muscle mass.

    Right now I'm not using a barbell at all but trying to build up to that.....doing various things with dumbbells for my shoulders, chest and arms, pull ups, and different machines for all areas.

    Would this be the right approach to take or should I just get a light enough weight on the barbell and start from there?

    What exercises did people do to improve get up to this level?

    As per starting strength start with an empty barbell, do set of 5, add on 5 kilos and do another and repeat until the bar slows. That is your starting weight. No reason in the world not to use the barbell straight away.

    As above, get the technique right and get a feel for the bar.

    As said make sure you find someone to teach you proper technique, if you pick up bad habits when you start off it can be hard to drop them later on.
