    Yes....caffeine...

Where have been for the last 120 years?

Believe it or not, before caffeine it used to contain cocaine.

There's lots, but they won't tell us exactly what.

Stuff sure is addictive though :p

An addition of the letter 'c' to 'additive', makes it 'addictive'.

It is additive, can be added to vodka, morgans etc

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

A friend of mine has been drinking coke/pepsi for about four years straight now getting through 2-4 litres a day. Well they decided to stop for various reasons (all that sugar ) but after two weeks they were getting blinding headaches and stomach cramps. So yeah they are addictive but only because of the caffeine, then again it wouldn't be the same without it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,048 ✭✭✭dolliemix

    Definitely.

I used to work with somebody who used to bring in a 2 litre bottle of diet coke everyday and have it finished by home time. She gave up when she was pregnant.

Another friend of mine has a boyfriend who used to drink a similar amount every day. He had to make a conscious decision to give up. It was like giving up cigarettes to him. He can't drink Coke at all now cos he's afraid!

Any foodstuff / beverage that has an opiate effect on the brain can be addictive.

I'd say people have an addictive personality more than addicted to a substance... It's easy to give something up and replace it with something else..

Yes there's caffeine and heroin in it. Bloody caffeine *shakes fist*

Sugary caffeinated drinks are very mildly addictive. If you drink lots of them, and then stop, you get headaches and have *no* energy for a few days. Coke would be among these, but not the worst, since it hasn't much caffeine, compared to an energy drink.

So which of the ingredients in Coke or other cola-type drinks has this "opiate effect on the brain"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

Yes. I'm finding it quite difficult to quit after my last relapse, but I have cut down to 1 can from 2 litres a day.

The real question is whether the additivity is commutative.

I find it fairly addictive in that if I have it one day I start craving it for the following two days. I used to have it a lot worse though where I tried to live off it during college. I started drinking Pepsi more often ever since I found out I could get 2 +50% bottles for the price of 1.

I used to drink 2L per day for many years through secondary school & college & a few years after that too. I would have been drinking cans of coke for as long as I can remember then buying 2L bottles in later years.
I have since given it up.
It is addictive IMO although caffeine level is a fraction of that in coffee.
It is interesting to note that I have zero tooth fillings, good teeth & no toothache & Im 31 so it might not be an bad as people would have you believe.

The half gram of heroin that they add to each 2 litre bottle.

my mum is a lecturer on drugs and alcohol studies, her research reveled that coca cola the company has exclusive rights to extract certain natural coca leaves from the amazon rain forest that are of the same family as cocaine leaves. so yes coke is defiantly addictive. not many people know about it either.

I can definitely see how its addictive...caffeine and fizzy drinks are the business.Red Bull on a sat night and im wired! Dont get the hangover till Mon though :o Cant drink it any other day though as i literally wouldnt get anything done. I already cant drink proper ground coffee in work as it sends me nuts.

Coke is savage but personally dont see how you could drink litres everyday...but addiction is a funny thing ;)

Reading this thread title made me want to go to the shops and pick up a can of coke.

I'm going to get some Lilt out of the fridge instead, but I don't think the tropical taste is gonna do the job!
