It's the cost to change - not what they are giving you for your own - that should interest you. Ignore what you think you're being offered for your own.

Could be any number of reasons though if the offers are low. Is it something undesireable?

Most money lost on a car is in the first 3 years of it life, sorry to say, but expect to lose a bot more. What car is it?

Other side of the coin, my last few cars were 1 -2 years old, so I have saved a packet on decent cars.

Sounds about right. 2yo formerly 30k highline passats can be had for about 15k.

    Sell it privately maybe?

a 30 grand golf. wow the dealership had massive windows right?

Unfortunately extras never hold much value, especially compared to waht they cost to add.

Go to a few more gagrages and see what they offer.

Why do you want to upgrade do you need a bigger car or is it purely boredom with the car you have now?

I think we can all understand the boredom bit.

The family of a deceased that I know of were recently offered a 40% drop on an 8 month old new model Avensis with 7k km's by the dealer that sold the man the car (and his several previous cars).

The market has tanked, but even in those circumstances the trade in deal you've been offered stinks. Vote with your feet. Either keep your existing car or take your business somewhere that may appreciate it.

The retail of the GT Sport 3dr 1.4Tsi 140 in July 2008 was just shy of €27k - ignore the extra's as they don't add anything on the resale.

The current retail of a Golf (MKVI) 1.4Tsi Highline (higher spec but closest to the MKV GT Sport) is €23,640.

It's now the old model car, where prices have come down by around €3,500 for the new model, and it's petrol which nobody wants (even though the emissions and tax are fairly good).

Think the main fault lies with the purchaser, and some with the manufactuer - but it's not the garage robbing you.

EPM's advice is spot on OP. Remember the car you are looking to trade in for has probably depreciated the same if not more than your own car.

Sorry to rub salt into your wounds OP, but it is only worth MAX 12-13k as a trade in. Dealer will add 3k to it to re-sell (covers wages/warranty etc)

As an example from a non-main VW dealer:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Golf/TSi-GT-A/201010197202832/advert?channel=CARS

Golf TSi GT Auto Dsg 140Bhp €14,950

That one has the very desirable DSG gearbox, but no sat-nav

Sorry if this sounds unsympathetic, but if it's worth more then sell it for more elsewhere. If you can't then it isn't.

I'd like to say a big THANK YOU :)

If there weren't people like you in the world, there'd be no 10year old cars with low mileage for people like me.

Trade it in, take the hit, get a new car you're happy with and we'll talk to you again in 2012.

-edit- just to be clear, 'robbery' is where your goods or money is stolen, 'rip off' is where something you need costs more than it should.
This is just a simple case of the Emptor didn't Caveat.

If you'd lose your nads by selling, how on earth do you expect a dealer be able to give you the price you want and not have lose at least some of his nads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Tea 1000

I'll give you 10k for it. Then you'll be able to negotiate a much better cash deal with the dealer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

18k is a big drop for a golf in 2 years without doubt and would be out of the ordinary compared to what a similar car was dropping for the years before 08.
The figures are scary in this case due to this golf having alot of extras added, the reduction in list price of a new golf now & also the fact that it is an old model.
There is nothing to complain about in relation to the price of extras being lost as this should have been known from day 1, likewise with it being an old model, this was always going to be the case.
The point you are missing is that the next car you are buying even if new will be significantly cheaper to buy than previously so the figures should balance to a degree.
Alot of people get annoyed now though because for example, if they always spent say 40k on a new car. Now people were spending that on well speced passats in 07 & an A6 was possibly 20k more.
Now suddenly they want the A6 at 40k but still expect the passat to be valuable leading to a shock quote from dealer. What people should be looking at is replacing like for like & then generally the figures are not too rough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,193 ✭✭✭Eircom_Sucks

i told the garage that id take the oem sat nav out and take the alloys off and he said he'd deduct €1000 more off it , i said " i thought extras didnt matter " he didnt have an answer to give me

yes it may be my fault im not doubting that , but 18k is alot to lose regardless

You need to try more than one dealer, it's quite possible the one you went to has experience of selling such model car and knows it could be on the forecourt for months at his place or he may just be overloaded with stock and it's his way of saying PFO.

it is when they knock on extra 4k and sell it and then wont even give you anything off a new car

As stated previously the new model Golf has killed your one regardless of extras you have on yours. The dealer will only offer you a trade price to cover himself for warranty servicing and profit. If you think your being hit hard i know a guy that bought a BMW M5 in 2007 at a cost of 156k and was offered 80k in 08 from the same dealer to trade up a year . Sell privately if you can and go in with cash and buy your new car cash...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,378 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

Op could simply sell it fit more than 12k that's if he can find anybody to pay more. It's bit the garage that's at fault it's people not willing to pay more.

    This guy is great.

Just because its a white-GTi-wannabe with Sat-nav means it must be worth at least 20k right? Madness.

    Some problems I see.

    - Its petrol.
    - Its white.
    - Its pre-08.
    - I bet it looks ridiculous with 18" GTi reps unless its lowered.

baby on the way and not practicle thats all

Baby on the way? Am I rightly assuming its your first? Correct me if I'm wrong.

What the hell is wrong with some people that when they find out they're having a baby they need to trade up a different class of car when they can't afford to??

Many of us were carried in 3dr escorts back in the day, not a bother on the folks. No panic attacks about the size of the car.

I'd hang on to it. You'll still have to bend into the back of a 4/5dr car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭messymess

That's savage depreciation! What can you get for it privately?

If you can ever remember anyone saying to you that they'd 'never buy a new car' this is the reason why !

OP, I feel for you but I'd say you're Eddy Hobbs and John Lowes wet dream!

A couple of years ago my sis decided to trade in her Renault Megane Cabrio for a Fiat 500.
The dealer offered her 12k for a 3 year old high spec Megane cabrio (bought new for around 38k). She decided to keep the Megane and run it to the ground.

Lesson is never buy a new car!!

    Nice.

What you should be looking for is a head doctor. ;) Could you not afford a proper GTi?

    Bye now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Best thing to do OP is sell privately for about 13/14k if possible. Then go back to that same garage knowing shoe is firmly on other foot. You can then bargain with them & you will possibly save 3 to 4k overall. Trading in is a non runner now it seems with relatively new stuff.

Sell it yourself and then haggle like hell with every dealer you can find.

But really I would mirror The Express by saying perhaps you should keep your car. I wouldnt see having a baby as precluding a 3 door at all!
    Keep it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 373 ✭✭The Express

Judging by the OP's username, I'd say he got roasted by some one before. Eircom shares, perhaps? :D

Seriously, though. Try a private sale with good picks on carzone and someone might get the horn for it. That, or shop every dealer in the country.

It hurts, but it's not robbery.

Edit: that being said, I think you should be expecting a grand or two more for it....
