No one will agree with me but I use google maps and earth. Not fancy but gets the job done for me and I can print out the directions to bring with me.

Google Earth lets you put in maps from a GPS as well if you can find what your looking for online, so handy as well if you want to take a planned route off the web.

Found mapmyride very irritating while trying to plot points, maps/earth just work easier for me.

I agree with you, I like looking at the route in earth mode.

yea + 1 on that - very easy to do the route up, and the summary tells you how many kms and what the ascent is

I use ridewithgps and find it very quick and easy to use. I wouldn't necessarily trust the metres of ascent though - it gave me 2,300 for the Orwell Sportive and reports from (other peoples') on-bike computers suggest it was a fair bit less than that.

i use the ridewithgps.com website too. Anyone with a Blackberry, I've got an application that you can use to track your mileage and then upload to ridewithgps.com. BBSpeedOMeter http://www.mobihand.com/product.asp?id=69752&n=BBSpeedOMeter

Basically, I once found a nifty little site that let you plan cycling routes using a google maps interface that computed the length of your cycle and whatnot.

No matter what I google I cannot find it >_<

Buying a bike over the next week or so (Probably a Merida Speeder t1) and trying to plan out a route for a nice spin to get a better feel for the bike.

There are many sites but not many that are truly cycle routing sites in that they mostly use google maps as you say and therefore stuck with what google gives you which is no bike routes (outside of small parts of the US). Here are a few to get you started.

http://mapmyride.com/ - ad supported which can be annoying

http://bikehike.co.uk/ - primarily UK based however will work in the South too but the OS info will probably not be available - good for gps - can't save routes

http://bikeroutetoaster.com/ - not bad - good for gps devices

http://bikely.com/ - in bad need of an overhaul. Slow & lacks features

Don't know of any of them are what you were thinking off. There may be some some Southern Ireland based sites but if there are I haven't used them so can't help there.

I meant one that I can plot my own route and it computes the distance and wahtnot.

I seem to remember some student posting about one he made for a project or something.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far though!

I am very aware of this, but this one was based in Ireland and had a nicer interface......

Thank you though, bikehike.co.uk is proving to be useful.

mapmyride is cack. Full of ads, and slow.

I used to use bikeroutetoaster.com, nice and simple and intuitive, but I've just moved to ridewithgps.com. Lovely interface, very slick, but the dealbreaker is the elevation graph that shows you where on the map the climbs and descents are exactly. Lovely stuff.
