I got pulled over by the Gardi the other night - basically I accelerated up the road quicker than I should have, my car is pretty loud, came round a corner and there was a van sitting right there. He pulled me over, I apologised etc – he did not say much, just checked all my details, all my tax, insurance, NCT and licence are in order, but still he asked me to produce my tax and insurance details at my local Garda station. Why do they do this? Is the ticket in the window not enough? Should I keep the tax and insurance disk in the car with me?

the insurance disc can mean nothing, you could have got a policy .. agreed to pay by direct debit. MAde the first payment, got the disc, cancelled your direct debit and kept the disc.

You will need to produce your insurance cert at the station

The insurance disc doesnt prove who it is that is actually insured. Im not sure what they would hope to find on a tax cert that isnt already on the disc; Im not even sure if I keep those. Usually youll only be asked to provide license and insurance.

And no, I dont keep my insurance cert in the car. Youre not legally required to, and tbh in the event of the car being stolen Id rather not have that kind of documentation in it...

Out of interest actually, what did they say about you accelorating too fast? Did you break the speed limit in doing so? Is there actually some law governing this; like if I take off from the lights at 8000rpm provided I dont break the speed limit and am not being reckless is there anything they can actually prosecute you on?

Are you shure he said Tax? All he needs to see is on the disk. Normally it's license and insurance cert they need to see??

To be a pain in the arse. It's a hassle for both you and the copper that has to deal with you at the desk now.

Don't know the age of your car but could it be NCT cert he meant or vlc to prove you don't need NCT?

Cheers lads. Ok I understand the insurance. Do I have to produce the tax or was a mistaken, I *thought* he said tax but was not sure. Is it just insurance then?

If unsure, bring the lot, VLC, Insurance, Tax, NCT. At least you can not be done for not bring anything.

bring the lot and make your visit is recorded

Very very important. Ive heard a lot of stories of people who have presented their documentation to the station only to get a summons to say they never presented anything... I think you can get some kind of receipt or something but Im not sure about that.

yeah - definitely definitely get some sort of written confirmation that you went and showed em whatever it is you're showing em.

This happened me a while back. Was asked to bring insurance etc to garda station. Promptly did so. And everything was hunky dory. Then I ended up with a court summons a few months later, on the grounds that I hadn't presented what I had been asked for. Went back to garda station to see what the story was - unfortunately there was no written record or anything of when I had originally called in. Nothing. Had to then take time off work and waste a morning going to court for no reason whatsoever.

Must get that the next time Im asked. Would save some hassle for when they pull me in next asking to drop them up again to the station

It's not for 'the next time' - it's in case you are subsequently prosecuted for non-production. I would doubt that it would be accepted as proof of anything during a future stop.

I always carry my licence and insurance certificate to avoid all this hassle....

i'd imagine you were asked for licence and insurance bit as previous posters said, bring the lot if in doubt.
You should be given a printed A4 reciept for a DLIP (driving licence insurance production) everytime this is done, a guard is given the option to print it off. It's then stamped with the station stamp. Be polite but insist on getting it
