Inflated used car prices?

Is anyone else flabbergasted at the price of used cars currently on the market, particularly from main dealers?

The prices seem way over-inflated, particularly in the current climate. I was just looking at some VW Golfs, 2009 models and the prices they are asking are laughable, there's maybe €2k off the price they were new last year - if you're lucky.

I've seen it in other makes aswell. Would dealers not think of lowering prices to get the custom in? Or do they not need the custom?

Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe I'm missing something.

I can't say Ive noticed it as I'm not in the market for a used car and would never be buying a car that high up in the year anyway. Suppose you will always have some chancing their arm, particularly if its an anyway sought after model.

Thats an interesting question. I often wonder to what extent main dealers rely on car sales. I reckon the real gravy is in the servicing and repairs for them but I could be wrong on that too.

There is a shortage of used stock in the country at the minute, which in turn pushes up the prices.

On top of that, there is a good demand for fairly fresh diesel Golf's - again, this pushes up the price. A diesel Golf probably has the best residual value of its class at the minute.

I know Golf's are steady and reliable cars, but does anyone think they are just ludicrously over-rated? Even 10 year old Golf's seem to have a significant premium over younger competition that seems wholly disproportionate.

On the OP, yeah, used car prices seem pretty damn sticky these days.

Would certainly agree with you on that one Treehouse72. I know a few people who have totally diesel Golf or Passat on their minds when it comes to cars and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I think build quality took a bit of a nose dive with the Mark IV model Golf also. A friend of a friend has a 2000 reg one and he is plagued with problems and even the floor behind the passenger seat is begining to open up seemingly:eek:
