Home Cinema: All-in-on vs. seperates

I have my sitting room wired for a decent system and will take the plunge this autumn/winter.

Being a beginner in this sphere, I thought a high-end all-in-one might be enough, but can stretch to seperate AV receiver and speakers.

Any opinions on whether a good all-in-one can be as good as seperates?

Depends on your budget, and how much we are talking you would stretch? I would say seperates would nearly always we be better than an all-in-one, plus you already have the wiring in place for seperates.

It can be as good but that would be an expensive all in one, around the same price as separates really so go with the separates probably..

    What seperates did you get?

Can anyone tell me if it is better to get an AV Receiver or an Amplifier (or both) for a setup of TV, Blu Ray, Satellite box and hopefully allow some stereo CD / Turntable addon in future?

    Thanks

I had a lot of experience in this area, seperates are the way to go Amplifier Denon AVR 1911 combined with a Pioneer blue ray DVD, Add a set of speakers i.e Bose acoustmass 6, 10, 15 you will have a hell of a system.

However seperates = more remotes so you may need to look at a decent all in one remote control system

Also you need to know how to set this up properly so you may require someone to to this

Thanks Michael. I only noticed recently that my 'electrician' ran regular electrical wires for speakers! How big a problem is this?

    Hi Dr. Nick,
You should head over to the Richersounds forum for some more info and some great deals. Have purchased from these guys in the past and will definitely be doing some business with them again. Stick with separates by the way. Once the bug bites it makes it easier to change things later and upgrade as necessary.
