Music during dinner?

Because of the ridiculous prices of bands, I don't think I can afford one. So I've been looking into wedding singers but they seem to be more relaxed so was thinking of maybe getting a singer for during the meal and just a dj afterwards.

However, I'm wondering if that will make people TOO relaxed or stop people from getting to know eachother and having a laugh over the meal?

Have you heard of the singing waiters? Supposed to be a good laugh. If they were too expensive I'm sure someone could do as good a job!

Depends on yourself. Music during dinner wouldn't be for me. It would make the reception feel a bit too much like a restaurant. Our hotel were playing music over the PA during dinner and we told them to switch it off.

I think people prefer having a chat and a laugh over dinner. A live singer of any kind is going to be quite loud and people are going to be annoyed that they have to try and shout over it.

I don't see the need for any sort of entertainment during dinner, to be honest. People are gonna be entertained enough by talking to each other / eating their dinner to even notice that there is no dinner entertainment happening.

Just go with the DJ! Happy days!

A large group of people generates quite a lot of noise during dinner. Added music IMO would just be more noise. Go for a DJ afterwards. Last DJ I saw came with a laptop - no singles or CDs anymore!

I've made up a play list and put it on an ipod to play quietly over dinner. Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf etc...

that sounds like a good playlist :D I might do something like that.

Looks like we may be able to afford the band after all anyway... we've had some cheaper quotes from some good pub bands.

We did almost the same as Beruthiel -- we had a band playing jazz during cocktail hour and dinner, and then a DJ cranked it up for the dancing afterward. It worked for us because the music was just to create a kind of atmosphere and ambiance than anything else, so an mp3 player would be perfect for that.
