Crown on 5 year old root canal tooth

    Hi there,

About 5 years ago I had a root canal treatment done on one of my molars, the second one from the back. The dentist prepared it for the crown by taking the enamel away and packing it with filling, making it almost square. I never went back to have the crown put on, but regret it now

The tooth is still intact, the filling is still there, but the filling inside the tooth has seemed to have shrunk a little bit. The tooth has also risen up out of the gum, so there is a ledge on the tooth, as the part that was under the gum has not been prepared at all.

Is it still possible to have the tooth crowned without getting it extracted? A dentist told me before that it may be possible but the gum would have to be cut away to allow the crown to have enough room to be glued.

    Any other opinions?

    Thanks,

    Ken

Cant tell you what to do without seeing you but you may be able to hold on to the tooth. You need to go to a dentist and get it checked out.

the bad news is that if the filling has leaked or shrunk, the root canal treatment may need to be redone before you get the crown. The longer you leave it, an extraction becomes inevitable

I had a root canal treated tooth, a premolar, crowned recently, 3 times actually but that's a different and very long story!!! There wasn't much tooth above the gumline to work with but it was crowned (3 times!!) regardless!

I didn't have any of the shrinkage you describe but I've been told I had a very good job done on the root canal in the first place. That rc job was done at least 15 years ago!

    Good luck with it! :)
