No idea what variety. If they arrive hopefully I will have better luck next year. It was a bit haphaard using bird seed.

Max of 4,000 saplings on offer, posted in September. Chose from Rowan, Scots Pine or Silver Birch.

This leads nicely to my next question, how big do Rowans get and do they have monstrous roots? Is it possible to keep it trimmed back like a shrub.

Rowan are a nice sized small tree for a garden. Probably around 20 ft. They do not have any disadvantages that I know of, pretty berries, which the birds like, not invasive, generally all good.

Edit: I don't think I would treat it like a shrub. though if you persisted in cutting the top off you might be able to turn it into one. Not the best treatment imho.
