I have an iPhone 3G 8gb. I wanted to jailbreak it but when I went to do it I got a message to say the version I was running was too old and to update. This I did but now I get a message saying it couldn't read the contents of the phone and to restore it

I did backup before I updated. If I press restore will it give me back the contents of my phone or will it be empty? At the moment I can only make emergency calls.

To make matters worse, I see from another thread that you can't jailbreak with version 4.0.2.

Just bit the bullet and pressed restore. It went through the motions and ended up telling me the same thing, it could not read the contents of the phone and to press 'restore' ???
Is there any way out of this or am I going to be stuck in this loop for the rest of the day? What to do?

    Ok.

You said you backed it up yeah ?

So,when you restore it it brings it back as if it's brand new - no music,no apps etc....obviously iTunes knows there's something wrong with the iPhone and wants to fix it.

So just restore it,and sync from your backup and you SHOULD be back to normal.

    Then JB with redsn0w.

It won't restore! It says it can't read the contents of the iphone and to click restore. I've already done it twice! If I unplug it and plug it back in it doesn't appear in the itunes library so I can't synch

Sorry, my mistake, of course it appears in itunes but I can't synch.

Do you get an error code ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭Lmao_Man

Google it and try everything you can, this might be worth a shot :

If you use windows, go to start->run-> %appdata%
Open "Apple Computer", Open "iTunes", check if there is a folder named "Device Support".
If the folder exists, delete any contents inside, if the folder does not exist create it. Make sure you empty the recycle bin.

If you use mac, go to "user name"\Library\iTunes\, check if there is a folder named "Device Support".
If the folder exists, delete any contents inside, if the folder does not exist create it. Make sure you empty the recycle bin.

Connect your iPhone to the computer and put your iPhone in DFU mode. Once you see it pop up in iTunes, hold shift or option (depending on your os) and click restore. Locate your custom firmware and repwn....

    Delighted it worked out :)

    No problem.

Remember if you are on 4.0.2 redsn0w will JB a 3G iPhone only. But as a previous poster said you can download 4.0.1 quickly and use that before apple won't let you use it - and use jailbreakme.com from safari to JB.

    :)
