had a swift 8-32x50 ,didnt like it
    wouldn hold zero ,blurry

but there is lads on hear who have them and have no problem with em

no worth the risk in my opinion

What about a burris or a bushnell? More expensive than the swift option and half the price of the smith and bender and zeiss' options. Bushnell are bloody brilliant.

I have a bushneill banner dusk & dawn 6-18 x 50 on the .204 and find it very good for the money.I find it to be pretty clear etc one of the lads has a burris but i dont like his particular one due to the heavy cross hair but it yould be alot better with the mill-dot recticle. do yee think a bushneil banner would be sufficent on a .308?

I have had 4 Swift scopes over the years with no problems EVER. I currently have one on a .223 (6-24x50) and another on a 30-06 (8-32x50) both Premier models.

Don't know if you've ever fired a 30-06 (Sauer), but it has a much harder kick than a .308, and the scope never lost it's zero. Same for the .223. You will have lads telling you that Swift are s**t and to stay clear. With good reason no doubt. However do not tar all scopes by the faults of a few. A friend has a Bushnell, he finds it crap. I had a Burris, it was crap. Hawke, AGS are both airgun scopes and i would never rate them as anything more. Others have used them successfully.

I do not expect you to pick a scope based on my opinions alone as i would not expect you to pick a scope based SOLELY on anothers opinons.

My advice would be to look at all the different makes within your budget. Pick 1,2,3 models that you like. Come back and ask about them and see which gains the most popularity from the majority of users. Then maybe choose that model.

What are you going to use the scope for?

Everyone knows what they want, not everyone knows what they need!

A S&B 6x42 can be got for small money. So too Bushnell, Leuplod & some others.

what is your budget, what is the primary use, and have you a budget for Mounts/Rings included in the overall price?

At the min i bout could only prob afford 400 euro or so as i have to pay for the rifle etc. i know i will have to get a very good set of mounts and wi prob pay up to 100 for these . I will be using the scope on a .308 and its main use will be for deer i have no intrest in shooting targets with it. thanks for the info

The original batch of Swift scopes were brilliant. The second batch were fair. The third batch were brutal. Not sure what batch is there now ...........

I used a simmons on my .223 and got a few bunnies with it. 3-9x I went NF after that and never looked back. but for small money they held zero on a .223 no probs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭doyle61

that friend of mine had his on a swift with no problems at all. when i got my .308 i put a bushnell on it while waiting for the IOR but it was a total disaster. grand scope for the .22 but WAY WAY out of its league on the .308. thats when i borrowed the simmons and it really surprised me. ild definitly put one onto the likes of a .223 though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,195 ✭✭✭patsat

I have a bushnell on my .270, which would be a far bigger kicker than a .308 and its holding zero no problem!

My father has a swift on his .243 and it also holds zero no problem!

i have a nikko stirling 4-14x44 mill dot .its as clear as a nightforce .there in around the 3-400 bucks mark .

I have this Bushnell 3200 elite 4-12x40 on the Sako .308 for stalking and find very good. Mounts are bit high though.

    08112009doecalf2.jpg

Then for the rest of the year for target shooting I use this Bushnell 4200 elite 6-24x50 it has the target turrets. ASE Northstar mod.
Again the mounts are high and I have to now use a butt riser, not shown, to bring my cheek up.

I use Nightforce all the way, helps me who would not be the worlds best shooter get great groups and good return on rounds spent.

    Not cheap though!

I hope to get a third and possibly a 4th

I have an 8-32X56 brilliant for bunnies during the day.

A 5.5-22x56 for deer and varmints at dusk.

I'd like 3.5-15x56 for night only

And a 12-42x56 for +400 yard bunnies, they are small at that range

I only have 2 at the mo, I deffo will buy a third soon, not sure weither to go low or high mag, prob low for the winter.

If I keep burris mounts on all scopes rezero'ing only takes 2 or so clicks.

It's all about what you can afford. Dusty87 uses a S&B 6x42 fixed power and he can get rabbits and vermin out to 200.
I try and cut my cloth to my measure.

I had a bushnell range finder, worst piece of dirt ever.

Saying that the higher end Bushnell are supposed to be good.

so has anyone got any ideas on what magnifiacation is the best for deer stalking is it 4 x 12 or would 3-32 orsomething of this range be too big? . would just like some info so i can make an informed decision. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,072 ✭✭✭clivej

Andy no need to go any higher than x16. A lot of stalkers use a fixed power of x6, x8 or x10. You won't be taking any shots futher out than 200y so they will be OK and your target kill size is 5" so what you realy need to know is the drop of your ammo over the different ranges.

The bigger the front lens the more light it will gather and the bigger the image you will see so a 50mm objective is better than a 40mm lens for the same mag lens. Again a bigger tube is better so the 30mm is better than the 1" tube.
But it will come down to weight of the scope in the end as there will be less to carry.

So your choices are sort of
    3-9x40, 4-12x40, 5-15x40, 2.5-16x50, 6-24x40, 6-24x50.
    Front or side parallax.
    1" or 30mm tube.

Just for a look see take a look at the Bushnell website and go through all the scope's there and get a feel for the different types.

    Happy hunting ;)

I use a 4-12 mag scope on my stalking rifle and I don't think I will be ever left wanting for more or less mag!

Nothing at all. I've still got one mounted on my .223 and have it for the last 12 years. I believe they are a copy of a leupold

I just recieved a mueller 4-16x50 Tactical Scope from the United States off a very good friend of mine today and i will mount it onto my CZ.223,has anyone tried these scopes and whats their opinion on these,

i had a look at them on the WEB and they got great reviews and they say they are as good as the top scopes but for a reasonable price.
