Ranges bad for clubs?

Quick one regarding something a 7 H/Cer said to me today.
He reckons the range mats twist the club heads on wayward shots significantly more as opposed to a wayward shot off the lawn.
I tend to agree but surely club designs are more robust than that(irons anyway).
    Thoughts?

Of course he's right, banging clubs off a rubber mat can't be good for them.

PS ...never take credence from what someone says by their HC.

In this case he is right.

I don't think range mats damage clubs. Are you sure he didn't mean that the club twists and the shot flies offline more (not the clubhead twisting relative to the club).

I'm the proverbial mule, that's why I posted this thread:)

That was my initial thought too until he said "yeah it just makes s*** of your irons".
I play with Mizuno MX-23 5-PW and the club pro had a look at them about 6 months ago, said they needed straightening.
I asked him why , he reckoned I'd bent them all...
I've given a lot of time on the range this last year and I'm a bit miffed to think I could've been doing damage.

If at all possible there is no substitute for hitting off grass anyway. You never get a bad lie hitting off a matt.

I'd heard range mats are not good for forged irons as they bend easier. I thought it would affect the loft more than anything - de-lofting I would imagine. As for twisting(like opening the clubface?) that could be disastrous on your swing. There was a thread on here recently enough about forged irons and recommending to have the lofts checked regularly.

Grass or sand are the only two surfaces that a golf ball should be hit off.
I never go to the range ,not only does it damage your clubs ,it damages your wrists too hitting off a mat.I detest mats.
