I put this in the 4x4 forum but not getting any replies so:
My Honda 350 is having engine problems at the moment. It's starting ok but when I press on the throttle it dies. Its like its an air intake problem. I took out the filter and there is a smell of petrol from it. Anyone any ideas what the problem would be? When I wind up the throttle manually it does rev up but the engine dies using the hand throttle. I cant even get up enough revs to put it in gear to move it

Did ya do any messing with the carburettor in it? Sounds to me like it's running a little rich maybe. Is it smokey when ya rev it? If it's excessive then I bet it's the carb setings. Just an idea to check;)

Yea its like its choking itself. Is there a screw or valve to turn down the petrol flow into the carburettor. I've tried leaving it running and see will the petrol just burn itself out. The quad wasnt started for a few weeks so I thought the petrol was gone stale maybe.

    Is it getting enough fuel?

There should be 3 carb adjusting screws, although not fully familar with your situation, there may be 4, 3 mains one however, a high speed needle, a low speed needle, and an idle, to me it sounds like the low speed needs a tweek. I heard you say that the petrol might be old? That can also be part of the problem. Petrol does go bad. Take off the seat and under the air box you should be able see the carb, 1/8 - 1/4 turns is enough. To find the screws and distinguish them is the hardest thing.

Ps if the quad is one of the newer versions the fueling might be electronic.

this happened to two i had ,is it a manual choke job with the control on the handlebars if so check the choke cable , water gets into the outer sleeve on it and runs down into the carb , the choke slide is made of brass and the body of the carb is aluminium what happens is you then get a chemical reaction with the two metals and the slide wont retract when it should and it messses up the whole settings of the carb ie running rich
don't leave it in gear ticking over ;) i had the great fun of trying to catch a runaway quad in 3rd gear it actually went through one fence and over another very embarassing

Good reply, seen this happen to one, bad contact on the run switch. It's got to be something simple. Especially as it's starting at all. Them honda 350 were the best ever made. Bullet proof:cool:

I agree with landkeeper, has something similar witha bit of grit sticking the plunger on the choke. Worthwhile taking it off and giving it a good clean.

so are you saying its fine if you rev it at the carb, but smothers itself if you push the thumb throttle???
have you tried it with the air filter off. sounds like its clogged.
before you make any carb adjustments, put some new petrol in a spray bottle, spray it into the carb and rev. if this works then its fuel starvation not air.

Id have to agree with landkeeper-i bought a 05 trx350 4x4 about 2 months ago it was ticking over fairly fast and struggling to get power,i was told to check the spark plug to see was the tip of it black with soot i did and it was black the choke plunger was sticking inside the carb the mecanic opened out the housing that the plunger sits in so it cant get stuck its running sweet as a nut there now.
    They are a savage quad.

    They are a savage quad.

Slate grey and she is running like a clock.
white she is running to hot, wet and she is getting choked up.

I had a problem on a motorbike last week where the vacuum hose fell off (vacuum hose sucks petrol from the tank into carbs)

The bike would start, on Choke only. then cut out when choke off, she was being starved of fuel.

mate of mine fixes Quads if any lads are stuck, he primarily does Bikes, but once the quad is not the wreck of the hesperus he will fix it!

Just sorted problem. There is a little bleed screw under the carburetor. Opened it and bled it . Mixture of water and petrol came out and let it flow until it was just a drip. Must have been condensation or bad petrol. Started quad and revved and problem sorted. Thanks for all replys

Must have been sitin for a while for that much condensate to accumulate. Good to hear she's running again with no major probs
