Mobile Broadband and USB extension leads

I bought a 5m long usb extension lead to use with my mobile broadband today but when i plug my modem in with it although i get a signal as soon as i connect to the internet it automatically disconnects and then a message saying the device is not available comes up.

I tried it on the old short cable and this does'nt happen. Is it possible to get the modem working with an extension lead at all?

I'm wondering is it maybe because the cable i bought is too long.

5m might be stretching it for a modem like these as they require a lot of power. A longer cable might work on a device that is not being powered by the USB bus, but not for this.

I've seen an E220 modem running on a 2m cable without any problem, but not 5m.

If you have a power socket near the usb dongle then you could buy a power usb hub and plug the dongle into that, and then from the hub back to the computer using your usb extension cable.

The shops i checked that had usb extension leads only had 5m cables. Even a 2m would be long enough anyway. I'll probably see if i can buy one online.

i tryed my modem with a 5m cable before and it wouldnt work it just said this device has malfunctioned and windows cannot recognise it.
tryed with a shorter cable worked fine cable may be to long thats why you are having probs with it

A mains powered hub would be good investment anyway but get a good make, I got a Targus 7 port with stand for around €20 and it has solved a lot of frustration with devices not being recognised and now i can leave most devices plugged in all the time.

I found the other short cable i had from my old 3 modem and was able to clip the two short cables together to give myself a longer cable. It's about 1m long but long enough and the modem works fine with the two cables.

ive used 5 meters cable with my old white round 3 dongle since i had no coverage indoors i had to stick it out the windows...though it had **** speed...but hey its that or nothin :( now i got the 3 Mifi so no need for cables ;) so maybe you should invest in a wifi 3G data modem :D
