Dont think you will get any new diesel car for 9000! Maybe you should look at a 08.

I picked up a '08 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi (albeit in the UK - '58 reg plate - December 08) for just over £8k; which translates to about €9.5k. Immaculate condition with added sports suspension/steering/alloys/etc. And £30 per year road tax (I'm living in the UK these days, so your tax will be different) as it has extremely low emissions.

So you can get a lot for your €9k (or maybe a little higher) if you look, and are prepared to wait a little longer in your search. The garage I got mine from is up in Nelson, Lancashire (in England for the geographically challenged) and they get in large volumes of cars (theyr'e also wholesalers for other garages) and called Steve Durkin Motors. They have recently sold cars to Irish customers (as in living in Ireland; not ex-pat like me), so they'll have at least a bit of a clue of what's what regarding Irish motoring.

add in VRT and I'd saw you are way off the €9k mark

I thought VRT was abolished for anything 2008 or over? I know the EU were applying serious pressure to our your f*ckwit gubber-ment over it.

Edit: My mistake; it was changed to a CO2 emissions based system for anything registered 1st July 2008 and onwards. The above car would have VRT at 14%, which would add just under €1400 to the total price, on top of what ever "administrative" fees the Irish government dreams up.

    Something like this:
    http://www.usedcar.citroen.co.uk/national-used-car-locator/Citroen-C4-4283505/?makeId=261&modelId=1540&priceTo=7500&fuelId=3&maxMileage=0&maxAge=3&vehicleTypeId=1
Exchange and VRT you'd pay €9.25k give or take a couple of hundred plus you'd get Citroën Select Approved Used 12 Month Warranty

    Road tax would be €104

I too am in the market and Im starting from "the more I search the more I get confused" syndrome.
Im looking at something around the 14k mark, and was looking along the lines of a Volvo S40 1.6D, or a Mondeo TDCI Zetec 1.8. My main driver (pardon the pun) is MPG, Ive searched high and low and seen refs to 407 HDi's as far as fuel econ but I'm more comfortable with the Ford or Volvo option TBH!
Anyone any good links to stats on MPG for this size car?

I currently have the new model Mondeo Diesel, and have owned the previous model and they both give just shy of 50mpg.

OK, Im re-evaluating so the word "Family" could limit my search :)

Now throwing into the Mix a Kia Ceed Diesel (eg. http://www.carzone.ie/search/KIA/Ceed/1.6-EX-D/201033199231134/advert?channel=CARS) and also having read here on boards some very interesting MPG stats on a relatively new BMW Diesel. Comments all very greatly appreciate - specifically once again on MPG...
