    Hi all,

Been searching on here for the last couple of hrs, Planning a trip from RIo to Vancouver overland landing in Rio in Nov, there is plenty info on here about places to go etc and i have the lonely planet etc, but cant find a whole pile of info on a central america budget and up to date info on a south america budget,

my friends have been there 3/4 yrs ago and they all said about 1500 euros a month for s.america, how would E2000 a month per person per month go? for a couple in thier early 30's?? looking at doing all the main things,

Is the central american budget similar to the south american?? or would you need to allow more $$ big into diving so will be looking at doing a bit of that also any advice on central america not so much on here about that?

And finally has anyone travelled up thru central america and crossed into the US overland any hassles??

    Thanks all

The biggest problem you'll have is to get to Panama as you can't do that overland. But there are many yachts that will take you on the 5 day voyage for about $300.

€2000 sounds like an amazing trip to me. I was on €1000 average but I was pretty careful with my money, didn't drink, sometimes cooked in hostels but I pretty much did all the activties I wanted.

Central America is cheaper. I'm not too good on how much per day. A hostel was $5 -$10 dinner would be max $7 in a posh restaurant. But yes, if you're into diving then you should budget the same for South as Central America.

This a a link to a German guy travelling from the US to South America overland. I dont know him personally but have emailed him a few times and he's always willing to answer questions people might have. He's now 800 odd days travelling the world. A bit of a legend.

I've ventured into the Darian gap in northern Colombia. If you pack very light, and pay a trusted local (with a gun, not just a machete), you can hike to panama from Colombia. You would have to leave your main bags on a yacht in Cartagena and pick em up in Panama city. But it can be done. Be very careful if you try it.

I've not gone all the way through, myself as I was not backpacking. I was just in the area and since one of my friends knew the area (and was armed) we walked in about 7 hours, inc return.
