a few months ago it was announced that 500 new jobs would be created but the only jobs I see are career break and maternity leave. it seems nigh on impossible to find a real teaching job i.e one that lasts more than a year enabling you to plan for the future.

IIRC, there was 2,000 new jobs announced a while back. That sounds great until you consider that they were split accross the 6,000 primary and secondary schools in the country meaning at most, it was one new job per three schools....

It's not 500 jobs in the sense of hiring 500 new teachers. I think when it's broken down it's less than 1 teacher per secondary school. What happens then is that the hours are split between the part time teachers in the school who are not on full hours to bring up their hours. So yes, extra hours for each school, but no extra bodies being employed for the most part. If you have even only 3 teachers on 12-14 hours, the hours would be absorbed by just those teachers.
