    From Endgadget:

"Bad news, jailbreakers: as promised, Apple's just released iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and 3.2.2 for the iPad, both of which close the PDF exploit used by JailbreakMe. That appears to be the only change -- it's definitely good news for anyone concerned about iOS security, although we're guessing the Dev Team is hard at work finding a new way to crack iOS open once again. We'll let you know if we find anything else -- won't you do the same? "

Does anybody know if this will fix the wifi problems that me and many others are having?

probably not, It says this fix just fixes the PDF viewer exploit/security hole.

Wait for 4.1 (probably out within a month as they're on the 3rd beta)

thats just plain wrong. .1 update, and no fix for the problems, the most glaring in my opinion being the proximity sensor. get your head out apple!

I literally just restored my iPod with firmware version 4.0.1 a second ago, SH*T

It's probably just aswell as the latest jailbreak appeared by many as a mess anyways.. Maybe they will bring back a tethered jailbreak. I would do a 2nd attempt at a jailbreak then.

Yeah, I had many issues with it - hopefully the next jailbreak will be as good as the pre jailbreakme days.

    Oh yes, indeed I am.

Very happy to be rid of being beholden to the dev team, et al.;)

Ditto. I haven't jailbroken since I had to have my phone unlocked when it wasn't available over here. I jailbroke my iPad just for testing and to see, and the thing has been constantly crashing. Will gladly update to this.

Apple obviously have stopped signing 4.0 etc so no chance to back up shsh blobs now if you havent already done so. Next jb most likely be for 4.1 at some point i mguessing?

i think a tethered JB is ****e to be honest, this one worked fine for me, and if all else fails i have 3.1.3 blobs saved, so can downgrade and use spirit.

Just dont upgrade and your Jb is fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

Won't be upgrading if that's the only hole they fixed. Will wait for 4.1 instead.

    thats all sure,
    anyone paranoid about security
jailbreakers can download pdf warner from cydia, as added precaution !

ive a feeling comex and co deliberately used the safari based exploit for jailbreak to save for a major update, it was an easy exploit to use when discovered, they have plenty of holes in iOS itself to work with as Saurik hinted at in his last video, they knew this would be quickly patched, so it makes sense to save the bigger exploits for bigger firmware revisions !
next one will be a tethered jb !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭Notorious97

how do people feel about tethered JB's? i dont like the idea of connecting to pc to boot up each time its turned off.

well when i said tethered i meant a jailbreak hooked up via usb,
    bad choice of word, sorry,
hopefully there will be none of that tether-to-reboot sh1te

haha no worries, i hope it wont be a tether to reboot too, painful stuff!

What kind of issues were people having on this JB? I had no issues. Installed Winterboard, SBSettings, iPhonedelivery, Fake Carrier, Glasklart HD, 5 Column SB and 5 icon dock. Then SSH'd in a custom SMS tone.

Have not had a single crash or hiccup. I know on my 3G I crashed every so often but I reckon that was because of RAM issues. With all those JB's running and god knows what in my Multitask bar I still have at least 130mb free but usually between 250 and 330mb so no issues here at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

I had absolutely no issues jailbreaking my 4.0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭oceanclub

I tried to do an update through iTunes and got an error. Then said I had to do a restore. Then got another error saying it can't restore.

Er, what do I do now? (iPhone newbie here.)

    God, iTunes sucks.

This is an official Apple description of what 4.0.2 is about.

Haven't bothered my arse upgrading to 4.0.1 and unlikely to bother with this either.

Bring on 4.1 and unlocking the FM radio*.

Have you got itunes 9.2 and up? I got an error 1602 or something like that, i turned off and next day just selected update instead of restore and it worked.

With regards to what issues people have had, i think it was mostly to do with their idevice crashing as cydia apps were not yet up to date when it first came out for 4.0, i think a week or so on its alot better, the main ones i use anyway havent crashed mine yet, so heres hoping!!

Yup; I've got 9.2.1.5. I get a "Preparing to restore..."message which eventually times out with an error 1604. The phone isn't jailbroken.

I'll follow a few things I've seen on Google. So much for the much-vaunted Apple user-friendliness. *rolls eyes*

so it appears that the 4.0.2 update is a load of toss then?

I'll be sitting tightly on 4.0.1 for a while so!

I just hope to christ my sister doesn't update that hers or im in for a whole weekend or *i want my JB back*

Popped into the 3 store on the off chance they could help - maybe having their own Apple that I could to an update from at least (obviously can't do a restore). No help; just kept telling me to "connect it to iTunes" (er, yeah buddy, that's exactly what I've been trying to do all frickin' morning). Gave me a number for Apple. I'll try on my home desktop and laptop later on, before I ring Apple. Bloody annoying.

Still sitting on my 4.0 (3G), don't see any benefit in going through the upgrade procedure for either 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.

Have to laugh at bleating about iPhone 2G and touch 1G users being left out in the rain. That's like complaining that microsoft have stopped providing security patches for Windows 2000.

3 aren't exactly receiving glowing reccommendations on boards since launch.

3 = bad service but cheap
    Vodafone = rip off
    O2 = Existing Customers only

Seems like a nice little arrangement the 3 operators have come to..

Ocean, maybe try reinstal the itunes, it might repair whatevers going wrong on you, and then instead of restore just click upgrade?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭Notorious97

Fair play to him, at least hes trying to fix the OS up, does this patch mean the other PDF patch we downloaded will be useless and this will replace it and fill any security holes in 4.0 (in my case its 4.0)

my 3G seems much more responsive with 4.02 and ultrasn0w 1.1.1- mind you all spotlight deactivated

1.) i used redsn0w 9.5-5 which installs cydia and ultrasn0w after that- maybe only possible for 3G at this time - check redmondpie.com or tipb.com
2.) go to settings- general- home button- spotlight search & deactivate everything and reboot- noticeable speed change for 3G

That doesn't really deactivate Spotlight. Just kills all the search fields. I'm not worried about speed, just don't want to have the spotlight there at all.

When updating I normally click download only and then install the update, has worked flawlessly every time.

Has anyone else noticed their battery taking a hit since this update? I updated, and have two new apps since, yesterday and my battery is just running down since last night (I noticed it this morning!), so since the only things to have changed are the apps (which I have turned off most of the time so shouldn't be draining anything) and the iOS update I figure something must be amiss with one of those... (It dropped 1% since I started typing this, and I'm not currently using the phone for anything!!!)

Scratch that. I deleted one of the apps (Waze) and everything seems to be back to normal now. It was turned off so I'm not sure how/why it was draining the battery, but I'm glad it ended up being something I could easily delete!

When you opened cydia the first time there was a option "make life easy for me". If you hit that then u should be ok. At the top of your cydia front page does it tell you that you have shsh on file for this device?

I think Apple stopped signing 4.0 anyway so you wontbe able to back up your SHSH for this firmware.

Use Cydia like recommended in the post above, but also a program like TinyUmbrella download and back up and save a copy of this to your PC if you can.
