    do they ever disappear?

i got screened by the gardai yesterday and i had a

public order act in 2000 and a

minor assault and criminal damage(the assault was dropped and i got 12months probation for the crim damage) in 2002

are these going to be on my record forever?

If the probation act was applied for the criminal damage charge then no conviction will be on your record, the fact the probation act was applied will be.

    Yes.

Make a request to Garda HQ under the Data Protcection Act. Send them the fee of €6.35.
    All will become clear then.

The U.K. has a piece of legislation called the Rehabilitation Of Offenders Act whereby ( to the best of my knowledge ) convictions are considered ' spent' after a certain period provided no other convictions occur in the interim.
Does similar legislation apply in Ireland ?

    Nope.

They stay on your record till the day you die.

The law reform commission have made similar recommendations for convictions to be spent here.

The Irish law reform commission has recommended that Certain convictions become spent. They will eventually introduce this legislation. So it's not for ever or as the above poster said until you die.

You shouldn't have a problem with a US visa etc.. and when they do legislate then it will become spent which means it wont exist for the most part.

Well they are certainly in no hurry to do so.

Glad to hear - it seems crazy that a moment of madness or youthful high spirits as a teenager should be used to scar the rest of a persons life.
That said , there are jobs in the UK exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and applicants must disclose everything , including spent convictions - the Police is one of the more obvious ones.
