Sewing Machine

I'm a complete novice when it comes to sewing, a friend has a singer machine and recommended it to me. I spend some time online and generally it appears to have attracted a lot of negative feedback... in saying that the general opinion out there seems to be that Singer have let their quality slide.

Anywho, this is the machine I was recommended and considering but I'm hesitant... can anyone recommend a machine similar to it? Thanks x

I have a Pfaff Hobby 1122 and can't say enough positive things about it. Fantastic machine that's very easy to use.

    Hi,

If you are starting out sewing I would recommend that you get a Singer that just does straight stitch and zig-zag. This will do everything you will need for sewing.
I would also recommend buying a second hand one. They are more solid than the newer ones, which I feel are not as well made as they used to be.
I have been using Singer for decades and would highly recommend them. I teach garment construction and all of the machines the students use are Singer both second hand and new. The old ones just go forever with little maintenance.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the advice folks!

I was about to steal my mam's Singer machine (which is decades old... I know she was using it before I was born and I'm 28) and it finally died!

I've read a lot about people complaining about the quality of the new Singer machines so I'd definitely consider donedeal or buy & sell for second hand older models. Does anyone know of any stores that refurb/sell second hand machines?

Lots to think about, I think a bit more research and bargain hunting is called for!

Hi there, is your mums machine really dead? it is quite hard to kill an old singer machine, It might be worth getting someone to take a look at it as the old machines are really great and they will sew anything also it could be cheaper to get it repaired then to buy another one.

Agree completely, the old Singers were workhorses and can really be worth repairing. I'm still very annoyed that I didn't get my grandmother's.

I have a basic singer sewing machine and want to move upto the next level for crafts etc. Any recommendations on what I should go for? Thanks in advance.

What do you feel that you are missing on the basic machine that you would like to see on another one? You really can do pretty well everything provided you have straight and zigzag. Don't be fooled into thinking you need embroidery, chances are you do not, and if you do then you need something seriously expensive!

My machine is fine but I would consider it a bit flimsy. I am making a quilt at da moment and the machine has difficulty sewing through the layers. I use the machine all the time but as I said I consider it a bit flimsy.

    Any ideas?

It might be worth getting a service done on the machine, this can real y increase the strength.

If not you'd be looking for something with a option to lift the presser foot higher than usual and a table attachment for quilting.

Make I don't think is really an issue, but I like singers, especially the mechanical ones rather than the computerised ones.
