How to watch tv in Ireland?

Hi, just wondering if someone could help me.

I've got a new build house (no aerial on it), a new 50" plasma TV and need to find someway of getting RTE 1,2 and tv 3.

Problem is that I have never setup a tv before. I went to a TV store where the guy recommended I buy this stick with some metal coming out of it (looks like this except for the pole)

    mz40t.jpg

But I don't have a clue what to do with it. He mentioned something about putting it in a loft?

    Anyone got any ideas

Every room in my house has the same style port hole as one of the connections on the back of my tv, coxial or something? Does it have something to do with this?

    Thanks alot.

    Thanks alot.

Get a skybox instead they will install everything for you.
All the main channels are on it.

I would suggest a professional aerial installer and external aerial, check out the the local yellow pages.

If you're not interested in Sky I would also suggest a freesat/free-to-air satellite receiver (no monthly sub) for the UK channels at the same time. If you have only one TV co-ax point in each room this could also be used to carry the regular Irish terrestrial channels and satellite channels.

You bought a new house and a new 50" television but you wont pay someone to come install an aerial?

Well i'm half way there (got the image on the screen, even though its looking crap).

Sod paying 220euros for someone to do it. Sounds cheap, but its many a night at the pub :p

NO need to be rude, OP is asking a genuine question. If you have nothing substantial to contribute I suggest you keep comments to yourself. We are not all technically minded here. I though this was a place where you could ask questions and advice. Rant over!

    Is it April 1st?

So many things to pick apart with this post.

"....I buy this stick with some metal coming out of it"
How did he receive the channels in his last house or when he lived with his parents? With a stick? Could he not have checked with them or know how he has received TV all his life?

So OP knows the word coaxial and never heard of aerial.

The shop guy would have told him to put it in the loft. How could OP not understand those instructions and say he "mentioned something about putting it in the loft"

How was he able to find the picture of the aerial and post it here? Did he search Google for "a stick with some metal coming out of it"?

No, they may contract that to someone. Argos is a Catalogue company. You are better contacting ISAA or Golden pages.
