just a quick query. It seems new customers get the better deals. Would it be a good idea to cancel current package and re apply for better package for the same price as I was already paying.

I was just wondering if there ara any drawbacks to this as I know if you downgrade they charge you €10. So is there any cancellation charges or hidden charges that i should be aware of?

    thanks.

If you dont have the service 12 months it is a 100e cancellation fee if you have it longer then a year its 30 days notice to cancel , but ring them and demand that you go on the new pack

Dont demand anything, thats not going to get you very far. Politely inform them that you are unhappy with the service that you, as a paying customer, receive compared to new customers, and inform them that you are strongly considering moving to Sky. Dont do it in such a way that they cut you off or anything, but call their bluff and see what happens.

It is like talking to a brick wall in relation to Downgrade charges. Never heard of the 100euro downgrade charge. They shouldn't be allowed impose this charge.

Its €100 fee to cancel a contract early. Downgrade charge is €10 I think.

I can understand an early cancellation fee, after all they have subsidized the installation and equipment for the lifetime of the initial contract.

However the €10 (which AFAIK is now 15) cancellation fee isn't good business. They suggest they are under pressure from their suppliers to provide stats each month hence the cancellation fee, however UPC is a big company - I am sure they have some if not allot of push in these matters.

From a consumers point of view the cancellation fee is a waste of money. Take my example:-

I was sitting around one Saturday afternoon and I decided I wanted to pig out and watch some movies. I am so fecking lazy this afternoon I have no plans to leave the house. So I go to the Sky Movies website to see whats playing find that their might be something worth watching. I phone domino's for the Pizza and UPC for the Movie channels. 30mins later I sitting backs eating and watching my hard earned disposable income. My lazyness = good news for UPC and Domino's.

Anyway the sales girls tells me I can cancel after a month so I am happy, I know that I can cancel after the month. I get the UPC bill in the door, with a charge for the movies for 2 months  So I quickly ring UPC to cancel (I hold on for Cust Care, sales were faster maybe I should ring them). I tell the Cust Care girl I am cancelling, she goes that will be €10 (at the time it was 10). What!? I know its only €10 but my disposable income needs to be spread around the country FFS.

I tell her I am not paying that. She tells me she can do nothing about it. We get into one of those circular conversations with cust care which you get the response I can't do anything to all questions, all being the one question whats a cancellation fee?

If I hadn't been charged the cancellation fee I might be inclined to have a lazy Saturday again, as would many other UPC customers. Or perhaps I am the only lazy one.

(On the 2 occasions I did cancels parts of my bill I refused to pay the cancellation fee, on both occasions I did not pay).

I have no plans to ever get more TV stations via UPC. There broadband and phone is excellent and the only reason I am with them.

downgrade fees are reduced from €15 to €10 as of 3/aug. €100 for disconnects within 12 month minimum contract is unchanged ,

If anybody wants to get round this charge they can have a go this month as upc are upping the price of sky sports and movies...they are breaking the terms and conditions and as such will have to wave the dgrade fee this month.

Screw upc sky digital with all the packages bar movies and sports channels with multiroom is cheaper then Upc's price for one box and regular pipe in one other room.
That and the Upc digital is a joke because of its piss poor quality even with the hd box its still horribly pixelated.

Can someone enlighten as to what these great deals are that new customers are getting?

incorrect information sky are not cheaper than UPC even on basic service and sky hd is 3times more expensive than sky.... also my hd box does not produce a horribly pixelated picture.. if you are not happy change but try to post correct info

Only recently did my family switch to sky because it was considerably cheaper then one non hd upc box and a regular connection in one of the bedrooms.
That and by xmas 2010 sky hd will come as the standard for them to roll out 3d television.
As for the pixelated picture Ive been in up to 6 or 7 different houses with the same shoddy picture including my own house.
Granted I blamed upc instead of the cable comming into the house which is more likely to be the problem.
Also you would want to check out the prices again because as I said the only reason we switched was because it worked out a good bit cheaper.
Also when you join sky they give you a free Hd sky+ box as opposed to your free upc box which you have to give back if you decide to change your Television provider.

I recently asked to be given the better package for the price I was paying. They did without question as I would have cancelled and just re applied as a new customer to get it (no cancellation fees as I am with them a few years).

I am happy with it as I now have the ultimate pack for just 5 euro extra from the basic pack I had.

UPC are cheaper I would have assumed based on TV, Phone and Broadband. They take into consideration Eircom and Sky.
I don't know what you mean by pixelated picture, I haven't seen skys so I cannot compare.
I would say if you are getting the premium channels and want the HD services from Sky then you best stick with them. But then Sky HD isn't available on UPC.

THE "FREE" box with sky which you can keep is b.s when your first year with sky is up and anything goes wrong with the free box you pay a service call out fee and you will have to replace the box at your own expense,,,, many people have changed from sky to fta or upc because of the excessive charges on call outs and the cost of relacing a decoder.

sky also charge more for non standard installs ( non standard seems to mean the tech had to use a ladder)

upc own the equipment so no fee to replace faulty boxes and standard install fees..

you are correct that some areas have bad service due to the state of cables in that area.. lots of the time it is because the cable ran in the late 80s cannot be accessed for service

The engineer told us that they would be changing providing HD as standard in the start of last quarter, if you dont want to believe me then thats fine, Im a patient guy and will be proven right! For the multiroom connection, all the entertainment packs and the Sky+ its only €42 inc VAT. For this you get all the channels they offer minus the Movies and Sports, UPC offers a VASTLY smaller selection of channels even on their top package and the quality is pretty poor in most areas compared to Sky.

Sky are a no-BS company, if an engineer charged you extra cos he used a ladder, then you got ganked and your a fool...our engineer was the soundest guy ever, even helped us run cable for the phoneline as part of the standard install...maybe try being nice to them? Lol.

Overall Id give UPC a 4/10 cos they are ok if Sky isnt available.

Sky would have to get an 8.5/10 for reliability and/or quality of service and for their massive channel selection.

And even IF the box did break down, its only €49 for a new Sky+ HD box off Sky.

You would really need to tell me what your paying for Telephone, Broadband and Sky TV to let me compare.

I pay around 80euro a month for the basic TV package, 8MB Broadband, one multi-room, PVR and their basic digital TV package.

Bar the cancellation fee I am very happy with UPC.

Folks, have a look at the new Terms & Condition that UPC are introducing from 1st September. Very interesting reading. Only good news for anyone wishing to cancel, is that they can now do so without charge if they notify UPC that they do not agree with the new terms, within 1 month.

    1. You are entitled to 30 days notice of any future changes to our terms and conditions.
    2. You are entitled to withdraw without penalty from your contract in the event of a change you dont accept by giving us written notice in accordance with our terms and conditions.
    3. A cancellation charge of up to €200 may apply if you wish to cancel your minimum period contract.
    4. We have amended clause 27 (Number Portability) to clarify you may port your number from UPC if you wish to change provider.

    1. I thought companies had to do this
    2. Does written mean by post? or will email do?
    3. I assume the 200 cancellation charge is for new customers but allows them to increase or decrease other unnecessary cancellation charges.
    4. They have to let numbers port.
