Where to live?

    Hi,

There is a possibility that I will need to move to Dublin September for 2nd level college.

The college is in Crumlin, but I have been advised not to live in Crumlin due to it's reputation.

I have never lived in Dublin (in fact, this is the first time I am moving out of home) so I don't know where to live in Dublin.

I don't mind commuting, I've done it before and I'd do it again.

Also, what should I expect to pay for rent each week/month? Or does it depend on where I live in Dublin? I will most likely be on the BTEA (though I am unsure as to how much I will get, if I am accepted for BTEA), so probably not a lot of money.

    Thanks.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with Crumlin!
Everywhere in Dublin will have it's rough side.
Lots of flats on South Circular road.
Crumlin is near to town though..
Check out DAFT.ie that will help you out with all the information required for your research

True enough! I have many friends who grew up and still live in Crumlin/Walkinstown however you are highly likely to having pretty dodgy people living on your road . A friend of ours bought in Crumlin and regretted it from the moment he moved in. he decided to move out with his young family and said he would never advise anyone live there.......and he is a Dub!!!
For somebody moving to Dublin for the first time I would not recommend Crumlin!

I would consider renting in Rathmines or the Kennilworth Sq area of Rathgar/(beside harold's Cross and on the 18 route).
You will be on the 18 bus route to Crumlin, much nicer atmospheric areas and also close to town!

its a very wide sweeping presumption to rule crumlin out altogether, there are actually nice parts of it but if u dont know the area u dont wanna take the chance that u end up somewhere dodgy.

walkinstown n greenhills are nice areas, depends on ur prices really i suppose

its a handy place to be in relation to town for socialising shopping and ya dont wanna be too far from college either, its also well situated for the m50/n7/n4 depending on where in the country you are from...

Crumlin is the same as all areas, there are good parts and there are bad parts. I'm lving in Crumlin and where I am is absolutely fine.

Handy areas for you: Harold's Cross, SCR area (lots of lovely little roads off the SCR, especially near the mosque), Kimmage (people will say this can be dodgy but, for the most part it's lovely).

Templeogue, Perrystown or Kimmage should suit you.

Take a look at rooms/places to let in Drimnagh. Around the corner from Crumlin and has the red line luas for zipping in and out to city centre very regularly.
Also, you'll find rent is cheap there - got a bit of bad press lately but isnt any more dangerous than anywhere else imho (scumbag minority aside, as everywhere).

I lived on Old County Road in an estate called Old County Glen for a couple of years and we never had any trouble, and it's very close to the college I'd imagine you'd be going to. I think there are apartments in there now too.

Crumlin is grand, why would you commute when you have a clean sheet of where to live, have a few mates who live up in Crumlin/Drimnagh and well it's no different to any other area.

Guessing you're going to Crumlin College anywhere along Cork St is another option as you have the 77,77a and a few other buses which take 15 mins max to get up to the college and are very frequent.

Thank you. As I stated in my OP, this is my first time moving away from home and I am not too familiar with Dublin as I am not there very often.

I will be going to Pearse College on Clogher Rd (if I get a place on the course that is).

If there are any houses on Daft on Clogher road definitely check them out. It's a lovely road to live on. You're close to the canal, near Sundrive road, walking distance from town, and you've got a Spar on the road too for all the essentials. You're also close to the Maxol in Crumlin (on the canal) that's 24 hours. Clogher Road's great!

Just look out for that junkie at the maxol always ranting and raving. Even some of the side roads off Clogher Rd would be a good spot, or anywhere along Kildare or Crumlin Rd. Also the 121 stops outside the college so anywhere along the 121 route, Meath St, Cork St, etc...

The one who always dresses in a miraculously clean football kit?

Good advice though, some of the unfortunates from the Dolphin House area tend to stand by the window looking for your change late at night. Not fun.
