Is this ok to plant stuff with?

I ran out of pots to plant stuff in and I decided to use this big, old wooden barrel pot that had weeds and old, dying plants already in it. When I took out all the plants on top the soil underneath seemed good but there's a lot of old root in the soil. Is this still good to plant new stuff or do I need to tip it out and start again?
Also, there seems to be an awful lot of woodlice in the barrel, is this bad?

I'm only an amateur gardener so all this is new to me...:o
