What the deuce? Well.. I never expected that!

Now here's a surprise. Apple isn't exactly known to be super friendly when it comes to video compatibility, and we can sympathize to an extent. However, for some inexplicable reason, Steve's brethren decided to give this CineXPlayer app the green light for general consumption, thus finally allowing iPad users to load up their stash of Xvid AVI files -- sans conversion -- via iTunes. While this is worth a quick celebration, it's still rather absurd having to resort to underhanded apps for such basic functionality -- something that we've been able to do natively on many other tablets and PMPs for years. Let's not also assume that this free app is staying for good, so grab it while it's hot. Video instructions after the break.

Great app - works very well. Curious to see where Apple go with this - possibly build in Xvid support in an upcoming patch?

Just downloaded it from the Irish AppStore on my iPad. Not available on the iPhone's AppStore.

So I guess this means we can expect Flash support soon too right? :D:D

Seriously, about time this happened. Hopefully Apple will form a strategic partnership with some other media firms rather than try to just own and dominate the field completely. Doubtful but here's hoping.

I haven't used this yet but I don't get why all the blogs are fussing about it bringing .avi playback to the iPad? YXPlayer and OPlayer HD have both been in the appstore for ages and both play .avi files amongst other file types.

In fairness, YXPlayer is completely sh*te but OPlayer HD works very well with most of my files. Fair enough, CineXPlayer may be even better (looking forward to trying it later) but is most certainly not the first app to allow .avi playback on the iPad...

FWIW - I've used both Yxplayer and OPlayer HD and I thought they were both terriblly unreliable. The majority of AVI's I threw at them either wouldn't play, wouldn't play smoothly, out-of-sync audio or serious lag.

CineXPlayer is far superior and has much smoother playback!

That's a fair point but my whole point in the post above was that all the blogs keep saying that CineXPlayer was first - it wasn't. As I mentioned above, YXPlayer was useless for me too but OPlayer works very well - you just need to enable the "skip frames" option in the menu. Once I did that, everything plays fine and there is no noticeable lag and I can't tell if it's skipping frames or not.

CineXPlayer does sound good though and I'll definitely be trying it out. Too bad most of my stuff is now .mkv instead and I doubt we'll ever seen anything on the current iPad models that can play those smoothly without conversion.
