When one books a flight with Aerlingus oen can reserve a particular seat in advance. One can also reserve a seat with the "manage bookings" on the Aer Lingus web site.
Then one pays for this advance registration.

However one is not obliged to reserve a seat in advance. On checkin you can take whichever seat is assigned to you, then you pay nothing extra.
That's how it worked for me the last time in Munich at the checkin desk.
