Not to that extent. If this pic is genuine (and I've no reason to believe its not) it's certainly a brown trousers moment. I think the Azores and Madeira are notorious for strong crosswinds.

That was really bad flying. He had all the time in the world to drop it on. Should've gone around. Shockingly dangerous approach though.

Toncontin also used to have the ultimate level crossing.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

OP looks like one of my landings... :-/

Thessaloniki Airport used to have a set of traffic lights on the dual carriageway right next to the threshold.

Peshawar airport has a railway on the runway too, but I can't find a pic of a train on it (From the outside)

Wellington Airport is another hairy landing location! Pilots are specially trained for operating in and out of here.

I can see it from my front window :)

Captain only landing for many airlines. The winds down here can be amazing at times and make for some interesting landings. Its obviously quite a short runway (2km) so not much room for error if you appear to be landing long. Also can have its share of Windshear. Sadly the largest traffic are 737s and a320s but somtimes a 767 might divert from Christchurch.

I've landed a piper tomahawk there many times, really keeps you busy on finals trying to stop the tail from fishtailing all over the place in a northerly wind and in a southerly its bounce and bump time :)

Skiathios in Greece has a tiny runway, iirc departing planes cannot leave with a full fuel load, they have to stop in Italy to refuel

Here's a failed landing, had to go around

Absolutely agree. Not sure how far down he was but it looked to be at least 30% down the runway.

A mate who is an EI skipper once told me his way of thinking. He dislikes the term 'aborted landing' as it assumes they were definitely going to land, as he tells it, they are always prepared to go around up until reverse thrust is engaged.

Closer to home there is a similar system in operation at RAF Northholt in London.

Sets of warning lights on the West End Road in South Ruislip are switched on to stop traffic when aircraft approach runway 25 !

Driving around Paxtuxent River NAS, the base is on surprisingly confined real estate. Most roads cross over taxiways or runways several times, on some occasions, they're the same piece of tarmac. All the traffic lights are mounted horizontally on the ground, to ensure that the wings of airplanes clear them.

    Hahaha - I've walked over it :P

I remember years back being on an Aer Lingus flight to Boston where we were told after landing that we had nearly hit the water.

Also I was on a XXXXair into dublin earlier this year that aborted the landing and did a do-over (we were about 100ft off the ground at the time of the abort!). I'm sure they had lined up to land on the M50 the first time around. I know the land markings well enough there from landings over the years to know we were a couple of 100m South of the normal approach (which I was thinking before the abort!) They told us the runway wasn't clear or something which was clearly bull****. Cabin crew were clearly rattled.

Hmm I doubt the crew would have said that even if it were true.
    and did a do-over
    A what??!

That's highly unlikely. The pilots wouldnt be using visual cues alone for the approach and landing. There the ILS which would be guiding them or acting as a check if they were flying a manual approach.
The M50 looks quite different to a runway when approaching on to Rwy28 or Rwy10.

+ the PAPI and I think he means a go around:D not a do over

Well thats what they said. THe cabin crew looked very unnerved.

Yeah no doubt. But I can tell you I've landed there as a passenger loads of times. I know the ground landmarks. We were no way in the usual approach route and appeared to be on a parallel route about 500metres more to the South. M50 is only thing I could think of in that location.

lol.... - thats the one. Phrase was escaping me

Let's not forget, though, the MD-83 crew on a VOR/DME approach to 34 who mistook some building lights for PAPIs and were lined up to land on a hotel in Santry!

    That's a good link.

from the pics it'd be easy enough to see why a pilot unfamiliar with Dublin might make the mistake.

Actually that lines up quite well with what I experienced.

Any of you aviation types can check it up behind the scenes if I can recall the flight number etc and I PM to you ?
