Annual/Regular Traffic Delaying Events

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if it would be possible to get a list together of regular events that take place on specific dates throughout the year, every year, that are known to cause delays in traffic and transport at all?

I forgot about the 12th of July events while travelling through the North and only remembered when I drove into some trouble areas with riot police vans and of course very slow moving traffic. Also some market type day in Buttevant I think it was, the day before.

Now I hear that there's also a regular march that usually takes place on August 12th up North but it's now been moved to August 14th. I hadn't heard of this day of marching before so I'm not even too sure what it's about.

It would be pretty good if a comprehensive list could be put together, or if anyone knows of one that already exists for Ireland/UK, please share :)

    Any feedback appreciated!

Sunday mass used always annoy me, you are driving from say Galway to Dublin, its early on Sunday and there is no traffic on the road. You are flying along, then you hit villages and towns and mass is causing you mental torture.

Largely a thing of the past with the motorway network.

Surely that is what is on www.aaroadwatch.ie?

With respect the 12th of July is a time that has always had problems in the North - short of not reading the papers/listening or watching the news I don't know how anyone in this country could not know that!

I didn't know and wouldn't know, why would anyone of a younger generation know or care about the 12th July?

I know about the 12th of July, just said I forgot about it. I don't have a tv and don't read newspapers and don't listen to the news so it's lucky that I even know about the 12th of July :D

So what's happening on the 14th of August that usually happens on the 12th? I heard it was just moved this year!

I'm signed up to AA roadwatch traffic updates but they usually just give notice on the day, or when the traffic is bad, as opposed to what's coming up and what to look out for (which they do give, but you'd have to check every day really).

You'd know about if you if took a wrong turn and ended up in the middle of a crowd in the wrong estate in your ROI reg car on July 12th when it's getting dark.

I didn't think it was possible for someone not to know what happens on July 12th.

Cormie, I don't think any thread we add here can beat the AA reminders.
You'd have pages and pages to sort through and none of it dated. Stick to the AA

Yeah, I have AA tweets coming to my phone but it's not something that can be checked when booking a job for example, but if I added such events to my calendar on a yearly repeating basis, then they'd always be in the calendar which I use when booking jobs so I could see what's going to be on that day. Does the AA have such a calendar or will I have to trawl through each tweet they do?

Rallying events can cause major disruptions unless you drive like your taking part:)

Surely you don't have to be young or old to be aware of 12th of July - it's widely reported each year by all news outlets so all current generations would be as aware of it as previous generations. The date should be a clue too... And if you don't pay attention to the news, then you are setting yourself up to be misinformed/unware of many things not just travel . "I didn't know the ESB was going up/ I didn't know there was a recession/I didn't know Jedward had released a new album.....!!"Re the general question on the thread. AA would be the best bet for major events but do tend to be real time alerts so could be too late if you've already planned a journey in advance. A good bet if you are planning ahead would do a google of what's on in ??? county for the month/day you are taking your journey(for example if you're passing through Killorglin today on the way to somewhere else, a google.ie "what's on in killorglin august" search would tell you the Puck Fair is on now so avoid the town if you have no business with the festival or else allow extra time/take alternative routes. Likewise Tralee in two weeks time for Rose of Tralee/Strabally/laoise for electric picnic etc).

Thanks for the advice, but for me, I'd need to know as soon as I look at a calendar. I could have a customer on the phone trying to book a job and it would just be nice to be able to say there may be delays due to X taking place so if there was some kind of calendar of events that take place annually on the same date, that would be perfect :)

12th July is when the Orangemen march, the day after is the Royal Black Preceptory while the 12th August is the Apprentice boys.

For market days in Ireland, Old Moore's Almanack is a good reference point as well.

I think to be honest that you are asking the impossible due to the huge volume of events that take place locally across the country - the list would be enormous!

There are festivals, concerts, sports events, the list is huge! Other than checking tourism sites, ticketmaster (by venue), and aaroadwatch I really can't think of any other way.

But certainly for NI, I would say that the 2 weeks around the 12th of July will remain troubled for some considerable time to come.

Thanks for that, the apprentice boys parade on the 12th has been moved to the 14th this year. I had a customer booked in for a trip up North on the 14th and he rang to tell me about the parades being changed from the 12th, to the day of the booking. It would be great to have been aware of this when making the booking in the first place without having to later find it out by luck :)
