Internet costs

This might seem like a stupid question, but lets say I use a currency converter app, a stock exchange app, or similar. One which has to connect to the internet for updates. Does it charge me?

I'm on Vodafone PAYG, and I have 3G off. I'm nearly sure I've only used the net when I've been in an area with wifi, but perhaps I wasn't connected.

    Thanks in advance.

Anything that connects to the internet, no matter what app it is or how it is presented to you, you will be charged for if you use the cellular connection to access that data. If you have a data plan, then its a non issue. If you are on PAYG and don;t have a data plan then you will be charged accordingly. I believe, its 99c per day up to 50MB but you are charged a certain price even if its only a miniscule amount of data. Check on their website to see what you are charged, or check your balance after accessing some data via an app on a 3G signal. (It might take a while to be deducted..)
If you are on wifi then your network does not come in to the equation at all.
    Hope that helps.

PS if you have 3G off, it will still use Edge to access the internet, just slower.

How about a GPS app? Like one you can use to find your car.

If you register for the 360 service you will be able to use 100mb daily for 39c... ;)

Doubles your data allowance for fraction of the price... :)

iPhone uses Assisted GPS by default. Which means that it triangulates your signal initially by accessing your nearest cell tower. This involves transmitting some data, which comes out of your data plan. so yes. I believe you can switch off the A-GPS though. anyone? don't have my phone on me.
