    Baby is easy

    - Clothes (go for a bigger size as they grow so fast that newborn stuff doesn't fit for 5 minutes!)

    - Cuddly toys or other toys aimed at newborns

Mum is a bit trickier, maybe some nice body lotion or a gift voucher, especially for something like a manicure of a haircut. Its always good to have an excuse to go for a bit of pampering after a baby :)

Don't get clothes.... everyone buys clothes... buy something for baby though... how about a door bouncer? one that attaches to frame of door... or taggie books for when baby is older??

The tippitoes door bouncer is great, very easy to use. The Lamaze toys are brill too, babies go wild for them.

For the parents I'd bring a couple of meals that they can freeze and then bung in the microwave. I doubt they'll be ready to have someone else mind the baby for a little while, but offer anyway.

nicest present I ever got after any of my kids was a voucher for a facial. It was heaven to have an hour all to myself and be pampered. One of my kids got a present of a set of bookends (from next) and they look gorgeous in her room. It is the thought that counts though so don't worry too much.

Not all mothers. I never wanted time off from my babies in the early days, then again I was trying to establish breast feeding on Addison in the first few weeks (didn't work :( ) and then with Saoirse she had to go to SCBU so was afraid to let her out of my sight for the first few weeks after she got home in case she started with the feeding problems again.

I know how you feel! Couldn't bear to be in another room to Megan when she was first born and for the first few weeks. I don't think I could believe that we had something so precious!

However, time off comes in many forms! My mother-in-law was a great help with feeding us, and Chet was great with the dishwasher/washing/tidying (in the early days!!) So for me that was time off while i sat with my feet up boobie feeding the baba!

When she was 3 and a half weeks old I was happy to leave her for an hour to get my hair cut and feel human again!

house work, shopping or messages, dinner made up in fridge - i personally don't like presents or vouchers

Isn't it funny how we are all so different. I would hate someone coming and doing my housework!! Sleep is the best present a new Mum could have, so if she is happy to, you could wrap baby up and take her for a walk letting Mum get 40 winks.

a really fab gift for a newborn is a nappy cake, there very useful and look good too. i know a girl who sells them and shes fairly cheap too compared to others online heres a link to her page on facebook. also money put into a bank account is another very good gift idea, they get soo much when first born. i know ive had 4!!

    Hi,

I recently got a really lovely gift for my baby boy, it is a print of a toybox that shows all his birth details like his name, date & time of birth, weight etc.. I put pic of it up on a link few weeks ago,

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056011642

It is really colourful and in a white frame, perfect in his nursery.
I loved it so much I got one for my God daughter, it was delivered directly to her home beautifully gift wrapped and Mum and Dad were thrilled with it. Made a change from all the clothes:)

It arrived 2 days after I ordered it and was very reasonably priced too.
I got mine via their Facebook page www.facebook.com/Prints4gifts

As a new Mum, I would suggest a voucher for a massage or to get hair done and to offer to babysit while Mum treats herself...heaven!!!!:)

For a baby girl maybe a really nice teddy bear. For mum, depending on budget and how close you are, a really nice body cream or a voucher for a facial or massage. Something that is pampering for her.

Thats true, This is the gift I give to my wife at least once a month. I just tell her sometimes that today is your off day with the kids and I lookk after my 4 year old and one year old from morming to evening. From giving them shower to making them asleep. Some times one year old one will try my patience but I beleive this is the best gift for any mother on the world...At least my one is very happy with this....
