Query re Jobseekers/Rent allowance

Someone we know is on Jobseekers.

He has health problems and when they sent him for a job he lasted three days then left because he was ill; ie he really is not fit for work and the issues are long term.

He said that he cannot claim Rent Allowance when he is on Jobseekers. Is that really so?

Would the fact that he left a job so quickly because he was ill not go against him? Or can he slip through the net so to speak?

He does not seem to know the system well.

We have advised him to get his dr to sign him off.

If he is not fit for work then he needs to go to his doctor who can put him on illness benefit unless he has a disability in which case he needs to apply for disability benefit only he and his doctor can decide which suits him best
as for rent allowance regardless of what benefit he is on he can claim it and saying he cant is ridicules they only way he cant is if he is living in a property that is above the threshold for his particular area however if he is on benefit then maybe he needs to renegotiate the rent down it really depends on his circumstances

Thanks for this; that was what we thought and what we told him . I know the set up re illness/disability but not re Jobseekers...
