    Does anyone know how to work out how calories someone burns lifting two 12.5kg dumbells 16 times(8 reps 2 sets) doing the barbell curl and lifting 30kg bench press 16 times(8 reps 2 sets). I put a similar question on the maths forum but the conditions are'nt really the same thanks again.

    Barbell curl with dumbells? Thats not an easy question to answer and to be fair, if thats your routine, stop it immediately and start reading all you can about training!

    If your concerned about things like that your doing it wrong. Count calories on cardio day if you must but get a real routine and just lift some weights.

    No I do'nt count weights in the calorie format. I do a run for an hour on a threadmill burning 850-900 calories in 60 mins. I do weights to kill time not to build muscle as I do'nt want to look massive and have the problem of loosing steam later in life and for it to turn into fat. I wanted to work out the amount of energy used

    Just a quick question..how do you know that you are burning 850-900 calories running? Are you going by the statistics on the treadmill or do you wear a heart rate monitor? Because there is a MASSIVE difference between what you read on the treadmill and what a heart rate monitor will tell you.


    Also muscle doesnt turn into fat when you stop exercising...I'll leave this to someone that is good at the scientific explanations to comment..but I will say that the only way to gain fat is to overeat.

    You should contact the manufacturers of the threadmills and tell them that there is inconsistencies with the calorie count on their machines. Muscle needs to be maintained and if not it will loose its tone and shape. If you maintain the same level of calorie consumption you will gain weight thats a fact you will gain a layer of fat on all your muscle

    My eyes!! lol

    Muscle doesn't lose tone. When you stop working out you'll slowly lose muscle and if you keep you calories the same you'll gain fat. Your arms might look the same size but it's flabby. It's not the muscle turning into fat.

    Believe me it takes a hell of a lot more than a few curls to be "huge".

    Also I'm 99% certain you don't burn that amount of calories. There is no way a treadmill can accurately tell you how much calories your burning. Usually they are miles off.

    This thread was going nowhere so it is now closed!!

    T Corolla: The question above is not really possible to answer, as there would be no one size fits all answer. IMHO different people would burn a different number of calories, dependant on a number of factors.

    However in the grand scheme of things the exercises you outlined above would not burn a whole heap of calories for anybody to be honest.
