As we all know the Fourth Major begins Thursday at Whistling Straits. Just had a quick look at the betting markets for a bit of value.

    Some that stood out are:

Kim at 90/1 - although he's just back from injury it looks a good price.
    Villegas @80/1
    Stenson @100/1
    Barnes @ 125/1
    Yang @ 125/1
    Jiminez @ 125/1
    Cabrera @100/1

I am sure Kim has majors in him and i have backed him solid for two years. but did you see him last week? Plaayed like an oul wan. Same the week before. I'd be writing him off for the rest of the season. I cant even see him making the weekend.

Agreed. Kim is a bad call imo. I'll have to study more closely before making my full selections. Darren Clarke will almost certainly be one of my long e/w punts though.

Im goin to invest 30 in this,
Anyone have any long shots who could be there or there about Sunday ?

i've already backed Donald and Stricker(nap)
For a few extra e/w's it might pay to stick with players that featured in the Bridgestone, good ball strickers will be rewarded, couldn't have Kim,Cabrera or Barnes

I actually didn't know he was playing last week until i read the newspaper a few minutes ago and saw he was out with Woods yesterday and finished +15. I'm still going to take a bit of him e/w though.

Absolutely do, never let anyone talk you out of a bet, i was just saying that I have practically been preaching about kim, and this is the first one in 2 years I'm not backing him (He missed the open).

Love this course. Hoping to play it next year(have family living in Wisconsin, about 10 mins away from the course!) when I'm the States.

Anyway, as posted in the gambling section at about 8 guys and picking 3-4 out of them. Haven't placed any bets but I like the looks of the following two guys:

Ryan Palmer @ 250/1 - For a guy who played very well last week to be so high(2nd) is quite surprising. Worth a couple of euro for sure.

Leonard @ 125/1 - tied 2nd last time the the course held the PGA in 04. Lost out in the 3 man playoff Vijay won. Low hitting and accurate driver, winds of the lake can play havoc I was told. He played some decent stuff in WGC even this past week too.

There are others like are -
    Jason Day @ 125/1
    Bo Van Pelt @ 66/1
    KJ Choi @ 66/1
    Adam Scott @ 40/1
    Padraig Harrington @ 20/1

I'll pick one... maybe 2 out of them.

See the tee times are out. Will starting time make as much difference the first two days as it did at St. Andrews?

Good shout on STricker. Doing him, and giving Francesco and O-Hair another chance.. Francesco will bring his putter one week and blow everyone away. Same for O'hair. Have to stop being so loyal to these guys.
I wouldnt be writing Goosen off either.

Sure why not stranger things have happend and at 125/1 its worth an e/w bet. But My money is going on ELS and mcillroy. Els is playing decent golf at the min and was one shot off the lead in 04.

Els would be worth a tiddler, but I wont be touching any of the irish lads this weekend (nor would begrudge them the win).

Heavyballs in fairness is never far off in his tips so i'm gonna stick a couple of euro on Stricker and Donald too. I think Nick Watney could go well so gonna back him also.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭thelongfellow

Purely on driving accuracy and putting this place should suit Stricker 25/1

    Also rans...

    T Clark 80/1
    E Molinari 100/1

    S Lowry 175/1 :D

I think you have to look at people who drive it well and play well in the wind. Also would be looking at splitting bets in the draw.

Glover is a huge price at 125 to 1.

Cant decide between Van Pelt and Barnes

when you consider how bad he was off the tee for most of the week it was some acheivement finishing in the top 5,if he sorts the driving out he'd have an outside chance

KJ Choi would be my pick....make it 2 Koreans winners on the trot.

Whistling Straits...a links course on inland America, gotta love it :D

Does Darren Clarke have a sniff. Played well there in 2004 and back to form of late.

Nice draw for Shane Lowry - out with Kevin Na and Scott Verplank. I expected him to be playing with a couple of lesser knowns. Hope he does well. I suppose Wisconsin would be like the Offaly of America so he should feel at home. :D

i'm saying nothing after backing tiger woods last week.

He's 16/1 on betfair (an astonishing price- its the equivalent of harrington being 100/1).

I will back some huge outsiders on betfair
    jason day at 289/1
    goydos at 479/1
    gonzo at 409/1
    glover at 169/1
    palmer at 239/1
    noh at 529/1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

interestingly, minimum bet on betfair is now €2, its used to be €4.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,759 ✭✭✭Dr.Silly

You just can't write off Woods, and at 16/1 is a fanstasic price.
Remember he's had e/w claims in the majors so far this year.

Rory McIlroy: McIlroy is my selection to win this week. T3 @ the Open and should really have won it if he showed a little more patience. Another top 10 in the bag last week. Links set up will suit and I hope he has matured enough to stay patient for 4 rounds this week. If he does he is the player they all have to beat imo. 18/1 (Bet365)

    Tim Clark:
Consistent all year and has the confidence from the Players win earlier in the year with a major field. 94/1 e/w (Betfair)

Darren Clarke: Has shown a return to form in the last month or so. Likes a links track. Long shout to sneak in to the places. 200/1 e/w (Ladbrokes)

Brendon De Jonge: One of the most consistent performers on the PGA Tour this year with six top 10's alone. Hits greens all day and is no 1 on the birdies count on tour this year. Big breakthrough possible. 170/1 e/w (Betfair)

    Agree , Furyk @ 35/1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭GampDub

4 I wrote down earlier in the week for this are as follows:

J Furyk - Backed him in the Open but he never turned up. Having a decent season and easily has a major in him. 35/1 (PP)

T Clark - Backed him in Canadian Open. Playing realy well up to that and had a great chance to win that. 90/1 (Boyles)

Both of the above to win the Comp and the following two as small E/W bets:

K Perry & R Moore - No reason other than I think these guys are typical of the type of player that could be there or there abouts in these type of comps. 150/1 for Perry and 125/1 for Moore.

    Best of Luck lads.

    Ended up doing these 3.
    10ew on Stricker (25), O'Hair(40), and Francesco(90)
1/4 odds first 6 with PP.
    Best of luck everyone.

I have backed:GloverVan Pelt D ClarkeBacked Yang the 2 tournaments prior to the PGA last year and didn't back him for it.I backed R. Moore for last 2 tourneys this year.

Having my standard 2ew on big John Dizzle (i know i know) in all fairness he is making cuts this year and if his putter works who knows..

10 ew on Goosen...knocking on the door all year and owes me nothing after the open.

10 ew on Phil.... for obvious reasons.

MIght have a few small in running bets but im happy with these for the minute.

Synopsis: The dense morning fog will gradually burn off after 8 AM this morning with hazy sunshine expected the rest of the day. Temperatures will heat up into the upper 80’s with humid conditions making it feel more like low to mid 90’s. A developing southeast breeze along the lake will cool things off slightly late in the day. A disturbance will trek across Wisconsin Friday night into Saturday with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Greatest potential will be Friday night into early Saturday and some of the storms may be strong with heavy rainfall. Winds will become blustery at times around this system, especially heading into the weekend. Plenty of sun, breezy conditions, and cooler weather is expected for Sunday’s final round.

i'm anxious about parrington making the cut here - if he's loose off the tee this place'll eat him alive.... with some fava beens and a nice bottle of chianti.... fffs fffs fffs!!!

leader after round one: Gentleman Jim.

Interesting options on the 18th tee.

    THE RISKY ROUTE
Players now have a dramatic risk-reward option off the tee: a secondary portion of the fairway that is a 300-plus-yard carry beyond the bunkers. Drives that fly the junk will scamper down a slope and leave anywhere from an 80- to 120-yard approach. "It provides alternatives and a level of excitement that wasn't there before," says Whistling Straits founder Herb Kohler. "The player can now pull out his driver and use it to the full extent."

    THE SAFE SIDE
The "upper" fairway is flatter than it was in '04 and the back tee box has been raised, so players can now see the entire landing zone. Depending on the wind and tee position, some players will hit an iron to prevent their drives from running through the fairway.

HORROR STORIES: A brief gut-wrenching history of the Straits' home hole
John Daly, 1st round, 2004 PGA Championship
Needing a strong showing to secure a place on the Ryder Cup team, Daly's prospects imploded with a quadruple-bogey at this, his ninth hole of the day. After pulling a 2-iron off the tee into a horrid lie in a bunker, he gouged his second shot just past the creek into a tangled mess of rough. With his next attempt, JD advanced the ball just a few feet. "No. 18 really crushed me," he said.

Justin Leonard, 4th round, 2004 PGA Championship
Following a solid drive, Leonard hit a 5-iron from 204 yards. "When I hit the shot, I thought I had just ended the golf tournament," said Leonard, who needed just a par to win his second major title. Instead, his approach landed a few feet short of the target and settled into a grassy hollow next to a greenside bunker. After failing to get up and down, he went on to lose to Vijay Singh in a playoff.

Eduardo Romero, 2nd round, 2007 U.S. Senior Open
Romero, the first-round leader, blocked his drive into a bunker on the right, leaving him 185 yards to the green. With his stance on a drain, he received a free drop outside the hazard. It didn't help. The Argentine yanked his second shot into a fairway bunker on the left and dumped his third into Seven Mile Creek before two-putting for a 7. Gloated El Gato: "I make a good triple-bogey."
