If it were just a once off occasion I'd rent but if you think you'll have two or more occasions to wear a formal dinner suit (a tudido) then there are a number of inexpensive suits available. Marks & Spencers had a range and I bought one last week in Clerys sale at 50% off. (Don't know if the sale is still running).
A tux is generally made of a wostd wool with satin lapels to give them a shine. Thesedays microfibres or polyester suits are common and cheap.
The trousers of a tux might also have a stripe on the outside seam of satin to match the collar.
Accessories for a tux are traditionally a dress shirt witha wing coller and a bowtie. Occasionally a cummerbund - a wide waistband tied at the back, might be worn.

+1 for M&S, they have a great, inexpensive tux range (check it out here), and if you're going to be going to more than just this over the next few years, definitely think of buying- you'll probably be going to college after that so you can bet 1 or 2 formal occasions will be on the cards. Makes no sense to keep renting all through college- you'll save yourself LOADS by buying.

You can change up the tux a bit by buying a plain collar and wearing it with a slim (but not skinny!) black tie. Looks just as good, and a bit more modern. Plus you'll stand out a little from the guys who are renting because the standard rental option is a wing collar with bowtie.

This site can give you a good idea of the various options: GQ guide to tuxedos

Also, PLEASE make sure you buy new black lace-ups to go with it... please don't wear anything else! Wearing brown shoes with a tux means you should be shot! ;)

i made a big mistake in getting tux for mine.just buy a nice suite and a waste with a tie/dicki bow/cra-vet , that would of worked out cheaper for me then , and plus the suite i bought was from marks and spencer so wasnt the best of fitting

from what iv seen, river island have suite on sale for 45 and these a decent and fitted suite's aswell :)

look at it this way , youll go to all that bother of getting suiter that special debs shirtt, waist coat, dickie bow etc and then when you get there you'l end up taking everything off one by one trhough out the night starting with the tie, dickie bow ettc

get a nice suite , waist coat and a nice tie to match her dress and there you go , not only will you be able to wear the suite again , you'll look different to everyone else :)

No need to buy a tuxedo, they're ghastly things anyway by-and-large, get yourself a nice black suit, a decent white shirt and a bow tie.

You will instantly get +1000 XP if you buy a bow tie you tie yourself, will take you an afternoon of practicing and watching youtube videos (didn't have them in my day) but you'll look a million times better than everyone else there with their rented clip-on jobbies, plus at the time of the night when everyone's taken theirs off you can leave yours hanging around your neck for that 13th-Duke-of-Wyndbourne look.

As a handy and recession friendly bonus it will also do you for funerals, christenings, weddings and job interviews (if there's any of the latter around by the time you get out of college)

Also - listen to whoever said that about the shoes. Very important.

If you want to spice the black suit up you can invest in a nice cummerbund and a dress shirt.

Also - make sure you carry a white handkerchief in your suit jacket pocket - it will come in handy far more often than you think.

Defo buy one, renting will cost you less, but when you need the suit again theres no point in just renting it out all of the time. Topman have some pretty slick ones that have been popular for the Debs, they also have an offer on if you buy a suit you can get a free 30euro shirt with it.! They do some ties, like gold and wine and silver, and black bow ties. And Next do some different colour ties like bright green and that if you were trying to match the girls dress
