Smaller Headed Drivers

Hi All, I've tried a multiplicity of the new large headed drivers and find I cannot get on with them, I just don't like the look or feel of the large heads.

I'm currently playing off 19 and using a Ping G5 three wood off the tee with decent results, normally on the fairway around 200 to 220 maybe a bit longer in dry and firm conditions. I was thinking of trying the Titleist 983K.

My question is have any of you gone back to older models with smaller heads and if so what is your experience? I would particularly be interested in hearing from mid to high handicappers.

Excellent driver. Still have mine and use it when I play on links courses. I hit it with a penetrating flight and can maneuver it easily.

Around a 100cc difference between the 983K(365cc) and the head of today's drivers.

I also owned the original Wilson Deep Red driver. Same size as the 983K but easier to get up in the air. I'm sure you can find either for a decent price online(best bet Ebay).

had a nike SQ. bought a 983k about 5 weeks ago. both have stiff shafts. was hitting nike poorly and short. hitting the titleist out off my skin, further(extra 30 yards minimum) and straighter. handicap has gone from 16 to 14 since. would attribute most of that drop to the driver. love the titleist. best purchase ever made and picked it up for a song, with a nice grafalloy shaft i might add.

would say one thing though....new or old, cheap or expensive, there is a driver for everyone, if you can find it, stick with it.

Best of luck and happy hunting.

I'm not sure whether you dislike jumbo headed clubs or you like smaller than average ones.

For a driver, a large head helps but only if you tee the ball at the right height and swing up into the ball of the ball. Teeing the ball low and hitting down won't work.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think the reason I don't like the large headed models is that I can't seem to feel the head when I'm swinging in the same way as I would with a 3 wood or iron if that makes any sense.

Well I tend to have a similar problem with large headed fairways woods.......I just don't like them and prefer smaller headed clubs.
