Just came across this app http://itunes.apple.com/app/aroundme/id290051590?mt=8

I'm not sure how many people know about this app and its integration with sat nav apps.

I find the POI search in Navigon to fairly basic in finding what I am looking for.

This app finds many more POI and it can send the info to your sat nav app of choice ( I know it works with Navigon and TomTom anyway) to start navigating.

Slightly off topic, but I was wondering, with the Iphone 4 using GPS, do you also need some sort of data connection in order to see your position on a map, say using an App such as Aroundme, Google maps, Navigon etc

The main thing I'm interested in is, if you're in the back arse off nowhere with no data connection of any kind, can you still get your position accurately on a map, or is a data connection needed?

No gps works independant of data, and incurs no extra charge

With stand alone sat nav apps like Navigon and TomTom, you don't need a data connection just GPS, as the maps are stored on the phone.

With Google maps and apps like AroundMe you need a data connection.

Thanks for that Mad Muffin :), wasn't sure if Google maps would work without the data connection. Good to know the Sat Nav Apps store the maps on the phone itself.

Also, what would be the better of the Sat Nav Apps? Navigon or TomTom? Do these also have Europe maps or just Ireland?

    Thanks

They both have, UK+Ireland, Western Europe, Europe.

I find Navigon better for Ireland because it uses NAVTEQ maps where as TomTom uses TELEATLAS maps.

I find NAVTEQ has a better map coverage for Ireland.

You do need a data connection even if you have the full apps. The iPhone has an assisted gps chip which from my experience of touring Europe won't get a lock unless your turn on data roaming for a few seconds.

    Wrong.

GPS works such fine without the assisted bit.

I get a gps lock in seconds with just gps.

Sorry, I'm not wrong. 2 weeks driving around Europe with a 3gs and it would literally sit for 20 minutes sitting in a cafe one day with plenty of overhead visibility using Navigon trying to get a lock when I'd data roaming off. Switched data roaming on, and all of a sudden, a lock within seconds. People on this forum reported the same thing when I questioned it a while back.

It's only an issue if you're after moving hundreds of miles away from your last logged location. There are dozens of reports of people having the same problem if you do a search for 'iphone gps abroad data roaming'. The phone may eventually get a lock after a very long time, but to make it any way accurate, you have to have data roaming on for it to identify the cell you're connected to and narrow down the parameters for a lock.

I checked the Navigon page when I had my problems, and many other users all had the same problem. Navigon were aware of the issue, and recommended rebooting (Which did nothing), and reinstalling firmware (Which also did nothing). They got a lot of negative reviews because of the phones inability to get a lock without using data roaming for a few seconds.

I haven't tried it on the 4 yet, but I did try it on my 3gs' last day of duty 2 weeks ago when I had to collect herselfs new car from the UK. Data roaming off, no lock for 5 minutes in the Dealership's forecourt. Data roaming on, near instant lock again.

    Sorry but you are wrong.

I never have data on and have had no problems getting a GPS lock with in seconds, with my 3G and iP4 both in Ireland and Europe.
