When buying a car which has road tax arrears. Is the buyer responsible for the old owners arrears?

The following is a quote from motorcheck.ie:
'We recommend ..... ensuring that all road tax arrears are fully addressed before completing a purchase'. Why would the buyer care about the old owners arrears?

No, I don't know where Motorcheck got that idea from. The purchaser is only liable for tax from the date of purchase.

    +1
Plus you can't pay for a fraction of a month so, for example, if you bought on the 21st July you must pay tax for the full month of July but you are not liable for any months prior to that.

It's more to do with the problems you might encounter from an Garda Siochana if the car you purchase has been out of road tax for a while. Point taken though - the language is a bit misleading. Will make some changes to it :)

"Hi Garda, I only bought it recently and have not recieved the change of ownership form as yet, as soon as I do I'll be taxing it"

Don't see how there would be any problems to be honest :)
