AutoTune and recording music.

I have a basic Toshiba laptop with windows vista. I was thinking about starting to record some music , possibly using Auto Tune. What would I need to do to get the process up and running? Would I need to buy loads of equipment ie sound cards ? And what kind of headset/mic would I need ? I was thinking of posting this in the music forum but I figured that many here would know what to do. Mods feel free to move if you think not.
Any help would be appreciated as my computer knowledge is fairly limited when it comes to this kind of stuff. Thanks.
    Minty

Probably better off moving this to the Music Production forum..

To record vocals, instruments and use MIDI, you will need a sequencer... There are a few free ones, like LMMS http://lmms.sourceforge.net/ ... and other commercial ones like Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/, which is hugely popular though I dont use it myself... This is free to try... I would recommend that you start with one of these...

Regarding the mic, you just need any USB mic or 3.5mm mic to plug in to the PC to record basic vocals... Alternatively you could buy an audio interface and plug in a proper mic. The M-Audio interfaces are very popular and cheap enough.. http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family

This is the music production forum. You should probably go through the old threads on these as well.. There's a wealth of useful information there, about sequencers, sound cards, mics, ... everything you are looking for.
