Think of it as an investment that will stay with you. The headphones I linked are actually on special offer for €102 down from €160. What's €100 - two nights on the lash? So stay in tonight and next weekend and you'll have saved enough money to buy them.

    yeah man,
if you're wanting to mix on them, unfortunately you'll have to splash out..
the AT's are pretty much aimed at actually mixing on them..there's a space or depth to them or something that is rare in headphones..i'd nearly trust a mix on them at the minute..

The link I posted in my first post on this thread goes to Thomann which has them for that price. Here it is again.

Well obviously I think they are decent otherwise I wouldn't use them. As for how they look that was never a concern of mine. If they don't look "modern" to you then you can alway check out pictures of other headphones that people have linked to to make sure you find a set that looks good to you.

I have the HD-380s myself, theyre a slightly improved (and uglier) version of the 280s.

The biggest criticism of the 280s, is that the headband can break too easily,
there's quite a lot of posts about it.

The 380s seem solid enough to me, theres a metal hinge inside the plastic and they show no signs of stress.

    Theres a graph comparison here:
    http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=533&graphID[]=543

What i love about them is that they have excellent isolation,
the pad actually fits around your entire ear rather than on it,
which is great if you have long ears like me.

The sub bass is perfect for me in the 380s, it sounds natural and not a bit boosted, which is what you want for production.

Some people accuse the headphones of being too dull,
either because they're pretty honest, or lacking in mid and high frequencies.
They came with a case, and can be folded flat too which is pretty sweet.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Sony MDR 7506s though

guys just had a think , there is no way i can afford to spend 170 on a set of head phones , i have to many things to pay for, for the next 3weeks , i would prefear a decent pair to start out with , as im only starting out . i have had a think and iw as told not to be buying real expensive stuff if you dont have the money when your starting out etc
    so are their cheaper alternatives

I fell in love with a set of Beyerdymanic DT150's in college last year.

They transformed my mixes because I could really hear everything that was going on. Very clear headphones with a wide frequency range and to me they didnt really make anything sound nice. To me they seemed fairly true. Fine to mix on but I would never do a headphone only mix anyway so they are very good for referencing IMO. We had them in the studio too and did well there.

About 155 euro or something on thomann. I shall be picking up a set soon.

yeah man, thats where i got mine..came in at about e100 all in..i only realised it afterwards that maybe you didn't have a paypal acc..but yeah, as far as isolation goes(you cant hear them twelve inches away, as opposed to hearing the sennheisers i have anyway in the next room)..you can actually mix on them too..

I cant recommend them enough, but i do know i kinda hijacked the thread..but you'll thank me if you take the plunge..whatever you decide, well wear..

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

yes i think i might just wait the extra while longer to get them :) ill get my mate to get them for me :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭cloudydsound

im no expert but i reckon you can't get accurate mixes on headphones no matter how good, i wouldn't fork out too much....i use seinnheiser hd201's which i think i paid about 25 quid for, and they sound perfectly fine just to make tunes you've been working on when volume's an issue but you can't do proper mixes on headphones imho

but for just working on stuff at night hd201's are just fine, read some reviews of them sure

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭A V A

nah i just want good ones with bass etc im guna get the ones cqd suggested

I have to give a shout out for the Creative Fatal1ty:
    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/627746/art/creative/fatal1ty-gaming-headset.html

It's designed as a gaming headset (which I bought it for) but the audio quality is stunning and it compares well in reviews with pricier headphones. The microphone is detachable as well.

    Best for the money: http://www.thomann.de/ie/sennheiser_hd25_sp.htm

Same basic parts as the hd 25's, which are the best in their own price range. All of the other headphones mentioned here are plop.

I would especially stay away from the 280 pros! Just writing 'PRO' at the end doesn't mean good!!

Have you personally tried all of the other headphones mentioned on this thread?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 hugh1097

No not all of them but have used the 280 pros and they're rubbish. Even as live studio recording headphones they are awful!

Not to sound like a d**k but anything made for gaming with a mic hanging off it is made for gaming, not for music. They will most likely be extremely coloured to make the game sounds better.

I've never put on a set of ATs and got a decent reference from them. I can absolutely vouch for the Senns as I have hd 25s and have tried the affordable ones and they difference is negligible.

All the headphones mentioned appear to be style over substance. As implied before looking like studio headphones doesn't mean studio headphones!

Your money will definitely go further with the Senns I mentioned.

most seen's i have tried are pretty rubbish

Have you tried the HD-25s? I agree that most commercial Sennheisers are poo, but these are not aimed at the commercial market. They are a proper stripped back version of brilliant headphones.

The only cans I have heard better than them (hd-25s) are the Ultrasone Pro 750, and they is 300 blips!

Eh no, you're the one talking rubbish.

First of all, there is no gaming version of the HD-280s,
so this talk of them being designed to colour the sound is bull****.

There is however a communications headset which uses the same shell,
because they offer such great isolation, it makes sense to use that design in a noisey environment:

    http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/professional_headphones-headsets_professional-headsets_004976

Now there is a gaming headset that uses the same shell as the HD-380s,
    It's called the PC-350,
but i do not know if it uses the same driver:

    http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/private_headsets-pc_pro-gaming-pc-350?Open&path=private_headsets_pc_pro-gaming

I have the HD-380s, and if anything they are under-coloured,
a lot of people find them too flat or dull to sound interesting.

Do a google search and virtually any private review you'll find will say the same,
people recommend them because of their more honest and linear response, and because of their good isolation.

I personally find that they might actually lack in the mid frequency range, but i dont have a better set of cans to compare them at the moment.
Comparing them to my monitors they do seem to lack somewhere in the range.

All i can say is they sound very far from coloured.

I've had a few sets of sennheisers, from really old ones to a pair of HD-200.

I use Beyer DT-100 for getting a mix flat/balanced and then the senns for listening pleasure.

I'd have to say after a session with the 'flat and boring' beyers (that are over 12 years old now) - the senns are nice but do seem to colour up the bottom end making it bearable after the beyers boringness.

Older senns seemed to have aggressive highs also.

Strangely, i got on with a set of stantons years back for live use as they were very loud lol, but not very robust.

If i had to buy another set i'd be looking for opened backed or another beyer pair knowing that they'd show up flaws more.

To first address the gaming headphones. I was not referring to the HD 280 PROs. Someone else put up some link to a set of gaming headphones, so clearly you haven't read the entire post and are more involved in flexing your 'frequency response' knowhow! The environment is also not noisy. He wanted something for using at night.

The 280s are also quite heavy and having them on for any extended period would be incredibly annoying. The Senns are nice and light so you could use for longer.

I stand by what I said about the Senns. For the money they are, to me the best and most practical for the required use.

Okay fair enough, ive spotted the headset you were reffering too.

But I still think this comment of yours isn't helpful:

"All of the other headphones mentioned here are plop."

There has been good suggestions besides the HD25s.

I'd imagine the hd25s colour the sound a lot more coloured than the hd 280s/380s,

    especially in the bass.

As they have been designed with DJs in mind.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11 hugh1097

Agreed that my comment was a bit much. I got a bit ahead of myself!

I just found the 280s to be too dull at the top and especially weak at the bottom for any practical use i.e. mixing. Might be a good reference but for use on longer sessions I'm not sold on them!
