Taylormade R9 Driver

Borrowed this off a friend of mine last week to play yesterday comp. Stiff shaft and 9.5 deg loft. It allows you change head and weights , to play certain different type of draws/fade. I kept the head at neutral and the weights at the back.Didnt want to mess it about

OMG. WHAT A DRIVER. All of my miss-hit didnt go off a mile long, any slice was just off the rough area (again it was long) but i was still in play. But when i hit it right, blimey it's a beautiful looking flight with huge distance. This gave me massive confident in my game.

Hitting into the strong winds at 260-275 yards for me (which is unheard of me) and when it was calm i was reaching up towards 280-300 which is again unheard of.lol. It went piercing through the wind like a bird.

I'm so tempted to buy this driver.:):):)

My current driver is the Cobra S2.:confused::confused:

Anybody have any good experince with the R9 driver???????

I was in Golf style in Galway there on Wednesday & they have a few in there secondhand. Lot cheaper than new one.

Played a game about three weeks ago with a bloke that had one,he was hitting every fairway, distance was about 275/280 everytime, asked him how much he paid for it he said 150 euros, turned out it was a clone,he bought it online from Hong Kong, but to watch him hit it you'd never guess it.

I have the R9 a couple of months and I absolutely love it - although I reckon the movable weights and flight control technolgy are gimmicks to be honest.

I'm also becoming very tempted by the R9 irons - lovely looking and feeling clubs but a tad pricey....maybe someday!

I bought the r9 460 a short while ago and am happy enough with it, although my Titleist 909DComp takes some beating.

Been using the Supertri for a few weeks now. Think i've missed about 2 fairways in 5 rounds. Awesome club.

Did you fiddle with the fct yet. Have mine set to neutral but was thinking of opening the face a bit as im getting the odd hook out of it. Had the burner and i think that had an open face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,652 ✭✭✭Trekker09

Was out today for the 1st time in 5 weeks and had my best driving round ever. Missed 2 fairways and was getting great distance. Absolutely love the club though haven't messed about with the FCT yet.

    Ahh Jaysus Lads ,

Will you give it over with all the good points of the R9 ,

Enjoying my new TM Burner Irons at the minute , Don't be laying it on about the R9 driver aswell ,

I have the TM Burner driver and we get on quite well , Is there that much of a difference between the 2 of them , I'm quite easily led ......lol

Bought the R9 Supertri at the start of the summer with 10.5 degree loft and the stock shaft in stiff flex. I had the TM Tour Burner previously and I had no issues with it but I am a marketers wet dream.

I am a big TM fan but I just didn't like this driver. The face felt a little dead to me even if the results were good. I like a driver that gives some feedback and this was not the one. Plus, the adjustability is fantastic if you are an accomplished golfer with a repeatable swing but for mere mortals it is simply encourages and hides swing flaws.

I replaced it with the Cobra ZL which is a no-nonsense, solid driver. I never liked Cobra drivers but this one is a serious piece of kit.

I know that my next comments will ineviably stir up a hornets nest but it bugs me when I see forums of club golfers talking about bombing drives of 270-300+ yards into the wind with the latest driver. Anyone who claims to drive the ball 300 yards would be outdriving all but the top 10-15 longest hitting tour pros. I have played golf for 20 years with players of all abilities and I have yet to see someone routinely drive the ball 300 yards.

Any have a link or any further info on this. Couldn't see it on their website..Been looking at that club for the last few weeks after playing with a guy who has one. He let me take 4 drives with it which were much further and straighter than my own Big Bertha. Seems like serious value at €165.

Thats highly unlikely as nearly all Taylor Made drivers are 1-2 degrees closed, something I do not like.
The Tour Burner TP (Tour Preferred) is the only Burner I know of that has an open clubface ,its 1 degree open .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭jimmystars

Cheers for that. Opened the face yesterday at the range and hit it a lot lower and not as far. It also tailed to the right. I set it back to neutral which is better for me. The only problem i have with it is that it can miss either way whereas with the burner i was able to eliminate one side of the course. Might just need a bit more practice with it as the burner took me a while to get used to as well.

They are hitting it nearly as far as Quiros and co. Incredible. Touch up on the short game lads and ye'll give the pros a run for their rmoney.........

Went out today to the driving round to fiddle around the FCT. The draw setting suits me slightly but i was still getting the same kinda yardage with the neutral setting. However both setting were great in terms of hitting the ball in the sweet spot and hitting them where i wanted them to go. Enjoyed it today.

Can't wait for the weekend:):). Lets see if the driver do me justice in some of the holes in Macreddin GC which i couldnt for the life hit them on the fairway previoulsy esp hole nbr 5,9 and 15th

well you shouldn't have any problem hitting those with a draw, maybe not 15,on 9 i just hit a rescue up to the top of the hill and another rescue to the green(hopefully)don't want to mess with that ob on left
let's know how you get on

Heavyballs, you right its not the 15th. Meant to say the 16th.

Played yesterday afternoon with a mate. Works a treat at the 9th, driver little draw and then 7 iron, well pleased. On the 16th, it did the trick again on the 16th, a driver little draw and ends up right near the on the bunker on the fairway (not the one straight from the tee box). This left me with an 8 iron which left me front edge of green. On the 6th short par 4, wind in the face, the driver did its job and left the ball on the front green.

It's a cracking driver. Give me an hood feeling that all i have to do is improve my short game and who knows what im capable of.:)

any difference between the R9 and the R9 460, heard that the R9 is actually only 440,

also would people have any issues buying drivers and irons in a shop. all the clubs i have were bought off a pro who allowed to take a load of clubs onto the range , tape them up and it away. it must be better than hitting into a net in a pro shop.

    any thoughts

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 251 ✭✭MasterKZG

The R9 i have is the 440 which is doing great for me. The head is slighty smaller and somehow that works for me.

I always buy my stuff off a pro. He let me hit different type of clubs, mostly demo clubs, to test them out. I think this is the only to know which club suit me.

Whats the story with the r9 super deep? 450 euro! Most expensive driver on the market?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭mchammer

just wondering what people think of the Movable weights - it seems to have a fairly big effect - I bought one second hand and the guy had the 16gram weight in the toe and 1gram weights in the other slots - I play a draw to a hook and it definitely changed my flight path to straight or a fade... as regards distance, I'm not really sure yet but I don't think it's giving me much more than 5-10yards at best...
just wondering if adding a load more weight to it would increase distance?? e.g. 2 x 12 gram weights and 16 in the middle? and has this been tried??

    Thanks
    MC

Can you change the effective loft on the r9 by moving the weights and if so what is the minimum loft you can set?

There was a second hand one sale in Greystones driving range recently for €149, had a few shots with it but i think all the thinkering with the settings would mess me up !
Might still be there and worth having a few smacks of it if ya live nearby, sale on there for other stuff also it seems as i was driving by it into Charlesland GC.

The R9 is only 420cc, you can actually find a nice comparison of all of the R9 drivers on their mini r9 site here: http://www.taylormader9driver.com
