    Hi guys,
As I'm following the paleo diet now after years of being a veggie one thing I've noticed is how easy it can be to become overly dependant on just a few types of meat. So far I've eaten bacon and pork, beef, lamb, chicken, a few types of fish (salmon, tuna, mackeral, sardines, haddock, pollack), mussels and prawns. Basically I want to try and broaden the range of meats I eat, without resorting to eating wierd cuts like liver or slimy shell fish just yet, but I'm not sure what's legal or available here. Is there such a thing as farmed rabbit or venison in Ireland? I don't want to eat duck because as hypocritical as it is they're one of my favourite animals :o I live in Cork if anyone has any tips for butchers!
    Thanks!

Sorry if I'm being naive but is that legal? I'd only eat farmed tbh wouldn't like to be chowing down on the last remnants of our native wildlife! :)

Depends on where and species I believe: some need to be culled, and hunters do a great job of controlling the herds. Don't think there's farmed rabbit, but plenty out there that need to be controlled as well, if you ask around at local butcher's they're bound to know a good source of rabbit.

Yeah there is farmed venison, I know of a farm in Sligo. However I don't know where sells it, you might have to ask your butcher to order a certain amount of it. There is such a thing as farmed rabbit but again I don't know anyone who supplies it. You should be able to get pheasant in a few months from certain butchers, you should also be able to source ostrich if you find a good butcher. Quail is available in the supermarkets these days, you could also try pidgeon, either wild ones shot or squab, which is young (farmed) pidgeon.
You're really missing out with duck imo, its a great meat, but there are plenty of other options out there. You don't seem to have tried (m)any fresh water fish yet either, so you have a number of options there, trout being the most obvious. There's a lot of other seafish I'm sure you could try if you go to the fishmonger and look around. Goose is also a possibility, easier to get closer to christmas. If I think of anything else I'll post it.

Excellent can't wait to go see now, I'm very interested in trying rabbit stew. My dad was saying they ate loads of it growing up. He just gave his shotgun into the guards too, pity he didn't know I'd be interested because he was saying they're very easy to hunt and skin yourself. I'll report back when I've had a look thanks everyone!

Tbh, it's a lot better to eat wild than farmed animals. The meat is generallybetter quality (ESP in birds like duck or game birds) plus the animals at least had sone sort of proper life. Deer isn't going to be wiped out any time soon over here.

As for rabbits, even if you still had the shotgun, you wouldn't be allowed to use it.

I'm into strange meats also currently the list is all the supermarket meats plus pheasant, woodcock, snipe, pigeon, venison, rabbit, bison, ostrich, kangaroo

    any suggestions for additions?

I like ducks but I like duck meat even more!

I've gone into Superquinn the odd time and they've odd exotic meats for sale (ostrich, emu etc.) can't hurt to have a gander in there.

Rabbit used to be more common than chicken here around the 50s and 60s, or so my Dad informs me, not sure where you'd buy it now.

Ah yes Superquinn are great alright, never seen one in Cork though..
Thanks Mellor, I had no idea deer were such a prolific species in Ireland, i thought there were feck all left, don't know where I got that notion from. Are you not allowed to hunt rabbit with a licence even? I have a friend who hunts duck and rabbit... I don't know would I be up to skinning a little fluffy bunny really anyway.

yeah, deer are still culled regularly, by the NPWS. we even had a non native species introduced in recent years that the NPWS would like to see wiped out ASAP

What I meant about the shotgun and rabbits, was that YOU wouldn't be allow to hunt with his gun only he would. You could of course get your own,
