The best golf tip you ever had?

The best tip I ever had was shown to me by a Pro in Carton House....

He showed me how to read the ball flight and identify the cause of the flight, this has proven to be the best advice I ever had.
Now each stroke I take becomes a personal lesson, I now understand "how did I do that" whereas before I was just cursing myself and learned nothing from a bad shot.

    Whats your best tip?

I't not so easy to describe but I'll try...

    There are 2 main vairables,
    1. The direction the club in traveling at the point of contact (POC), generally this can be "out to in", "neutral" or "in to out".

    2. The angle of the club face at the point of contact with the ball, generally this can be "open", "neutral" or "closed".

This gives 6 different combinations of shot:
Neutral swing + neutral face will give a straight ball flight with no drift left or right.
Neutral swing + closed face will start off straight but tail to the left in flight.
Neutral swing with Open face will start straight tail to the right in flight.
In to Out swing with closed face will start out to the right but tail to the left.
    etc. etc.

If you are unsure about a shot, hit it with your practice swing.

Accept whatever game you have on any day. Don't beat yourself up too much and don't over-analyse your game, in the middle of a round.

for bunker shots think of the ball as a the yolk of a fried egg..and you wanna hit the whole egg

I try to laugh after a bad shot but sometimes my lungs are killing me after 9

Yes, great advice but so hard to do if you're having a shocker.

I'd squeeze some toothpaste on that egg but I'm not allowed to hold it tight enough, never understood either of those

My cousin in Canada told me that the pro in his club tells pupils to use their deck to sort out their alignment, to make sure that clubface, feet, shoulders etc are all correct. Tried it when I got home and it works.

A couple I always keep in mind:

Monty on playing out of trees: "Make sure to miss the first tree".

Pater Alliss on playing into the wind: "Don't hit it hard, hit it well".

When putting, position the line on the ball to the pin.
When driving, place the ball number in your line of sight, and keep your eye on that damn number!!!

    ??

I'm struggling a bit with alignment, can you expand on that? I've no idea what you're talking about.

He's probably talking about the lines on a square patio? I actually do that :)

best tip I've had was to get the feeling of thumbing a lift with the left hand in order to cure my push/push fade. Thank you Ben Hogan. Thank you!

If you have a timber deck, you have lengths of timber supposedly running in a straight line. You basically use straight lines to align your feet and clubface. If you have the room to swing a club on your timber deck, it is also a great visual aid to check your swing path.

Hope that's a bit clearer for you!

If you don't have a deck, just lay two clubs down like train tracks, one for the ball, the other for your toes.
When the two clubs are parellel you will notice that the line for the toes appears to go left of the target this is very common mistake in peoples stance(assuming your right handed) some people tend to aim their stance at the target which sends the ball to the right of the target.

That's a terrible tip! Surely you need to align with the line of the putt - not with the pin....

Learn how to hit a draw and a fade on demand but play to your natural shot shape.
