School Books Sticky - Swap with other Parents?

School Books featured on another Media report recently where Parents who already have enough bills to pay were criticising the costs involved and the fact that the Publishing Houses seem to needlessly revise the same old books every year......

Basically they change page numbers and other non-essential details in order to force Parents into the Shops to buy what is essentially the same product a second or third time.

Its a dishonest and greedily sharp practice and needs to be stopped or at the very least opposed where at all possible.

    - Why not have a sticky on here where Parents could post Book Lists and then People could Swap them amongst themselves in an organised manner?

This would be strongly in the interests of common sense, avoiding an obvious rip-off and developing some sort of a sense of a mutually supportive Community.

Mods - This isn't Adverts.ie territory as I see it as it simply wouldn't work - I'd imagine People would simply post lists and then PM each other contact details and sort it out agreeably between themselves :)

At a first glance this seems like a very useful idea.
It may need Admin approval though. I'll ask a few questions and post here again when I know for sure.

Any e-mail addresses or phone numbers posted on-thread will be deleted, so the PM function would, as you've suggested, be ideal.

Don't have kids myself but know a few people with kids of school going age. Having listened to them talk about the prices they have to pay for school books this sounds like a great idea.

our school organises a time and a room each year where parents can sell on or swap their books each year to other parents before the end of the school term. Its usually pointless holding on to books for younger siblings as they are being changed and revised so often. For secondary pupils, I can't see why teachers can't do as we did years ago though - "if you have version x, its on page 14, version y, its on page 18 or else just check the index for other versions.

In Primary from about 3rd class, my kids didn't write into the workbooks themselves - promotes better writing and understanding than just filling in blanks in a workbook and allows the books to be easily sold onwards as well.

Also, O'Mahoneys bookshop buys back secondhand books and sells them onwards. I've got loads of very good quality secondhand secondary school ones there at about a third of the new price. Sometimes the books have hardly even been flicked through.
