I have a constitutional law exam coming next week and I'm told there's a good chance the role of the President is coming up. Its a handy enough topic but what form the question that might come up is the problem. Whats the point of the office of the President is an obvious but can any one else think of any other one?? Maybe something to do with Art 26 and the reference of bills to the Supreme Court??

Uachtarán na hÉireann is a largely ceremonial role, but has 3 main powers: 1) can reference any bill to the people for referendum; 2) can refuse a Dáil dissolution; and, 3) clearly the most important function of Uachtarán na hÉireann is the Art 26 reference to the Supreme Court to test the constitutionality of a bill.

I don't know what kind of exam it is going to be, but I could hardly see the function of the president being a standalone question of any sort.

    Thanks a lot.

Article 26 would be the main one from an exam point of view and it's been used I think 12 times since the inception of the Constitution. I'm prepping an exam question on this at the moment for the FE1s and I recommend having a look at the Constitution Review Group reports, in particular the first one that points out the limitations of A.26.
