    Hi,
Does anyone have a sandstone patio, just looking for a bit of advice, I got my garden landscaped and a sandstone patio put down in June this year. Some of the slabs are chipping already and the stone around the patio the top of that is chipped in places too, Im worried that by the end of the year it will be wrecked, Had the gardener out today and he looked at it, he says it has to be somethin chippin it like a hammer, wood, etc... which have not been near patio, he has never seen this and to monitor it, He says the sadstone is not faulty, We have not even started using the patio for anything to be harming it already, would cats do it? i have a side gate and noone has acess to my garden only myself, hubby and little girl, and when she is in the garden so am i so its not like she is doing anything, advice needed urgently,
    thanks :)

What type of sandstone was used?

Some of them are quite soft and in the weather we get I believe they delaminate which is similar to shards of stone coming off at the top. Would look similar to chipping.

If it's chipping at the edges could be poorly laid or grouted. Might be worth finding out from the person who laid it how they grouted it. I'd say take some pictures and go talk to some of the specialist paving companies to get their opinion, might be easy to fix. Try Natural Stone Yard in The Ward, Beechvista Garden Centre off the N2 or Manor Stone in Portlaoise.

Sandstone is considered to be a very soft rock in some cases. I'm surprised that the gardener or whoever layed the stone did not test the stone before it was used in the build. We had a section of stone installed in our garden about a year ago and all stones were given a few knocks and scrapes before purchasing to see how they would wear and tear.
    Hope it works out OK.
